DE Ryan Williams (official thread)

Mothra said:
has anyone seen the new videos out for this kid??

Yes. Williams has a very good first step and is very quick off the ball. He does a good job shedding blocks and doesn't stayed blocked long. In the clips they show he looks to have a great motor and he's a big hitter. When he makes a tackle he runs through the ball carrier. They say he's put on about 20 pounds of weight since last season but kept his quickness. Very impressive looking kid. Not that star rankings matter but I'd like to see the film of all the kids that are rated higher than Ryan Williams.

So would you guys say a Vrabel comparison is out of line? I like the frame and explosion.

He's quicker than Vrabel but probably not quite the pass rusher Mike was at this point. I've seen someone say he looks like a quicker version of Simon Fraser. While I think a lot of that comparison is due to the fact Simon and Ryan are both honkeys there might be some validity to that. It's like the comparison between Doug Worthington and Will Smith. Other than the fact they are both DE's from New York I don't see a similarity at this point.

His video reminds me a bit of Massey's from last year, although Ryan looks a little leaner at 240 compared to Massey's 255. Some of Massey's best plays were ones where a stunt was on with the tackle or he just split out wide and came straight down on a slant. Williams seems much the same stlye of pass rusher. Both have great motors as well. Williams obviously likes to attack from different angles which is great to see at that age.

In TheInsiders "All Recruits" listing by ratings, the current top 50 listed are 5-stars. Numbers 51-247 are 4-stars (going by 40 players per page, and the top seven guys on page 7 being 4-stars), so BFH is almost dead on.
The Insiders cut off for 4 stars is 250. They expanded their 5 star list this year from 30 to 50. 51 through 250 are 4 stars. Jaimie Newberg posted this info on Bucknuts just as the ratings were coming out.

Then they owe 5-star ratings to players 248, 249, and 250. Anyways, at least we all know what the criteria is supposed to be.

Catching up with Ryan Williams

Bill Kurelic
BuckeyeSports.com Recruiting Analyst

"We're doing great," Mission Viejo, Calif., defensive end Ryan Williams said when asked how his senior season has been going. "We just beat Long Beach Poly in a big game, 41-14. We go against Concord DeLaSalle this weekend. We're 4-0."

Williams says a few schools are still calling.
The 6-foot-5 and 240 pound Williams had scholarship offers from Ohio State, Oklahoma and Colorado before committing to the Buckeyes early in the summer.

"I'll probably wait till my season is completely over before I make my official visit to Ohio State," Williams said. "It will probably be in December."

"I talk to coach Fickell every week. I've watched a few of their games. I watched Saturday unfortunately."

"It's hard to believe I'll be at Ohio State in a year. They said if I can get significant playing time as a freshman I'll play. If not I'll redshirt."

Asked if other schools are still recruiting him, Williams said, "I still get some calls. But I tell them I'm committed and they don't call back."

Williams is the No. 10 weakside defensive end prospect in the Rivals.com player rankings and the No. 25 prospect overall in the state of California.

The scUM game atmosphere just blew him away. He says tOSU fans are more crazy than what he sees in California.

Ryan and Kevin hung out with Worthington, Denlinger, Boone, Cordle, Hartline and Robbie S.

In addition, JT has an in-home visit with Ryan and Kevin on Nov. 28th.

He thinks he has gotten better and faster with the pass rush. His technique is better and he is better at stopping the run.

Kevin also mentioned that tOSU is recruiting Reuland and Moline. Plus he said they are still working on Sanchez. He said if something happens with Norm Chow then Sanchez may reconsider.

That would thicken the plot quite a bit. Though I do have a hard time seeing Sanchez come here, I imagine that he wants to play early. Smith will probably be our guy the next 2 years, unless something changes. If Sanchez commits, I have a feeling that Robbie S. will feel a bit slighted. We'll see.

i'm more concerned about getting reuland and moline next year. sanchez is likely staying put. if chow does go to stanford, osu will at least have an edge on these two next year.

although if sanchez called tressel and asked if a spot would still be available, i would think it would be.
