DE Steve Miller (Official Thread)

McKinley?s Three-Headed Monster Sinks Massillon 40-17

Fans or no fans, the Bulldogs defense continued to give the Tigers offense fits. On a fourth-and-7 play Tigers running back Alex Winters was lit up by a McKinley defender, which immediately dislodged the ball backwards. Alertly, defensive lineman Steve Miller fell on it near midfield for the Bulldogs, but Miller wasn't done. On the next possession he and defensive back Don Davidson sacked Kempt in back-to-back plays pinning the Tigers back to their own 10-yard-line. On fourth-and-20 Massillon decided to punt, but Devin Smith's kick went nowhere. It literally netted 0 yards, which set the Bulldogs up deep into Tiger territory. Holloway plowed in for a 1-yard score 3 plays later.

McKinley's defense was led by Freddie Burton and Burrows with 6.5 tackles each. Steve Miller added a pair of sacks and Don Davidson also had a sack.

The NAPA Buckeye Recruit of the Week!

STEVE MILLER

Canton McKinley Bulldogs

Canton, Ohio

Defensive End

6-4, 242

Senior, GPA: 3.4

College of Choice
: Verbally committed to Ohio State.

Who Lost Out?: California, Florida, Michigan, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, Tennessee and UCLA.

The Scoop: As far as defensive players go in Ohio's class of 2011, few, if any, are more athletically gifted than Canton McKinley's own Steve Miller. College football programs from east coast (Florida) to west coast (California) pined for Miller's services. Yet Miller stayed true to his Buckeye roots by becoming Coach Jim Tressel's second verbal commitment for 2011. His goal is play in the NFL. And if Miller is to one day play on Sunday's, well then, that would mean he excelled Saturday's for Ohio State. The bottom line on Miller, though, is that's he is as lean and muscular as they come. He just flat out looks like a fearsome defender. But Miller does need to work on technique as he oftentimes plays too straight up. He'll likely redshirt his freshman season and eventually become a two or three year starter for the Buckeyes - winning numerous awards along the way.

Toughest run defenders

What we look for: There is more to this position than just chasing quarterbacks. If a player is going to be successful on defense, he needs to be able to stop the run. He must be able to take on a blocker and even double-teams without being pushed off the line of scrimmage. He must be able to move well laterally and keep containment on the outside. He has to be strong enough to keep blockers off him and shed them, so that he can make tackles or be fast enough to chase down plays if an offense runs away from him.

Steve Miller (Canton, Ohio/McKinley)

The No. 3-ranked defensive end can be tough to run at or away from. Miller needs to keep adding bulk to his frame, but can be tough to block one-on-one. He has good strength, brings his hands and uses his reach to keep blockers off him. He plays with good leverage and can set the edge. He is also athletic enough to be disruptive from the backside and can run down plays if not accounted for. Plenty of teams still like to try to pound the rock in the Big Ten, so Buckeyes fans should be happy a good run defender like Miller is headed to Columbus.

Under Armour practice Day 3 blog - ESPN

Miller, Johnson, Bellamy shining
11:16 am ET -- Future Buckeye defensive end Steve Miller has made two great plays on inside run drills. Tennessee linebacker commit A.J. Johnson has been the most consistent player through early reps on the White team. Mike Bellamy, a Clemson commit, is making up for his rough Sunday with his most explosive play so far. He burst through the line on a draw play that would have been six. He was untouched through the hole, so fast.

MILLER PLAYS WELL

Steve Miller, who will sign a letter of intent on Feb. 2 to play football at Ohio State, just returned from Florida. McKinley?s dominant defensive end played in the Under Armour All-American game last week and he played on the white team, which was coached by NFL Hall of Fame coach Mike Ditka.

While the Red team got a last-second 24-22 win, Johnson said Miller played well.

?I think the game was significantly faster with the caliber of athlete on the field, but he represented himself very well,? Johnson said. ?He had a couple of sacks and some pressures.?

Miller?s signing becomes very interesting for Ohio State. Solomon Thomas? (for now) five-game NCAA suspension could figure into Miller maybe playing early in Columbus.
