DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Last year I might have agreed with you, but Pittman is the complete back. Strong, quick, good blocker, team player, good hands, student of the game, well composed...

He's 1st round material.

It is way too early to talk of draft positioning let alone anyone's departure.

That aside, NFLDraftCountdown shows several running backs projected as first rounders. Pittamn's name isn't amongst those listed. Though, it is only fair to say that a lot can change. (For instance they project Michael Bush as a 1st rounder and we don't even know if he will elect to come back to Louisville following his recovery from injury. Most likely not, but you never know).
Other than Michael Bush RBs projected presently include
Adrian Petersen - Sooners
Marshawn Lynch - Cal
Kenny Irons - Auburn

Other mentioned on alternative scouting sites include Wolfe - he of NIU fame and Tony Hunt from Penn State.

Point being there is a lot of name talent available for 2007 and I think last years crop of 4 running backs in the first round was a high point. More likely a back with excellent skills like Pittman will last till mid-late day 1, rounds 2 (perhaps deeper yet than that).

i'd love to get in the minds of the guys that vernon lines up against. seriously, you cannot feel good. holding is not the last resort but the only resort. i'm still waiting for a play where vernon and a tailback meet head-on.
There was a great description of Gholston's play over at Buckeye Commentary.

Albert Young Meet Mr. Gholston
October 01 2006 10:19 PM

For a period of time in the 1st quarter, Vernon Gholston could not be blocked. At least, he could not be blocked legally and, to Iowa's credit, they tried to do it the right way at first. Then, they started holding like all other teams, but unlike all other teams, they weren't flagged.

Not for holding. Not for anything. Zero penalties.

During that unblockable period and in a span of a few plays, Gholston sacked Drew Tate (though ruled an incomplete pass), had another tackle for loss, generally caused catastrophic harm for Iowa and made one of the best singular plays you'll see. After shooting the inside gap, Vernon was being draped on the left by an Iowa offensive lineman. Using his one free arm, Gholston took down hard charging Albert Young for a loss of a yard. Now, Mr. Young isn't some 180 lbs gnat - no, he goes about 210 and was running downhill before Gholston stopped him dead in his tracks with a single arm take down.

We fans have annointed just about every high school DE coming here with measurements of 6-3 240 4.5 as the next Will Smith. It's about time that we got one right. With Gholston, Laurinaitis (the next AJ), Jenkins (the next Springs) and possibly Russell (the next Whitner) anchoring next season's defense, I can not help but look ahead.

I'm too busy enjoying this year to look ahead :)

Gholston makes good on one part of his prediction

Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston learned two things about himself yesterday with his second-quarter interception: He has good hands for a pass rusher and he should not go around making bold predictions.
After dropping off the line into zone coverage in the flat, his theft of a deflected pass from Bowling Green quarterback Anthony Turner set up the Buckeyes? third touchdown in their 35-7 win. But even though Gholston returned it 8 yards to the BG 21, it wasn?t what he had predicted, and his defensive line mates reminded him.
"Earlier in the week, he had said, ?If I ever get a pick in the flat, I?m going to take it to the house,? " defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock said. "So I gave him a hard time about that. But I am just ecstatic he was able to catch it."
Besides, he did get 8 yards.
"Yeah, but you?d like to go all the way," Gholston said.
No matter, the pick will do a lot for the morale in the D-line meeting room, defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said, and bring attention to a relatively unsung player for the top-ranked Buckeyes, who boosted their nation-leading interception total to 12.
"Vernon has played well all year," Heacock said of the sophomore, who added a sack to raise his total to 4.5, second only to Pitcock?s five. "He has just really been a consistent player.
"I don?t know coming into the season if I thought that would have happened, but he has really been consistent and made some big plays."
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Gholston is just getting started, really, said middle linebacker James Laurinaitis.
"Vernon, I think, is seeing how dominant he can be with how strong he is," Laurinaitis said. "He is realizing how strong he is and how much of an impact he can have on this team and this Dline. ? He?s showing he?s got some hands, too.
"He has the capability of really doing whatever he wants, that?s how strong he is."
But getting his hands on an interception, that was his first one since ?
"Ever," Gholston said. "That?s something we?re not used to as defensive linemen, so the opportunity to get the ball in my hands, it was great."

This young man is a sure tackler, no one gets away from him. I'd like to get him make the ALL Big Ten list.
