DE Vernon Gholston (Official Thread)

Just because you have good measurables doesn't mean you'll make it in the league. Look at JaMarcus Russell. If Vernon doesn't have his heart in playing, and being the best he can be, then players with far worse abilities will make the cut when they put 110% into it.

JaMarcus Russell was a fat ass and continued to grow fatter and fatter until he was over 300lbs.

The idea that all it takes to be a successful NFL player is "measurables" has always bemused me. I think Vern has demonstrated that he is a hard worker, and that he has been coachable. His speed and strength are unquestionable. It may be that he is just missing some essential skills that set high-caliber NFL D-linemen apart, but that aren't so easy to define in words.

I don't see why it's necessary either to slam Vern or defend him. He's a fine Buckeye, and I wish him all the best in the future, whether it's in the NFL (seems unlikely, but who knows?) or doing something else.

Some people can't take the scarlet-colored glasses off. I think there are Browns fans board who would prefer if their team was composed entirely of tOSU alumni who have washed out on other teams.

I think Vern and Pitcock were the only two 'washouts' that I wanted the Browns to give a shot to due to the lack of depth on the DL. There are some other Buckeyes that I would have liked to see them draft/sign, but I don't know if any of them would be considered 'washouts'.

Hawg, I was just getting ready to bring up the Pitcock situation. Another guy who was just tired of the "business" of the game. For anyone who's played football through the levels you know it becomes way more like a job after High School. Alot of the joy of the game goes away and for some people, thats all they really play for.

Like to see Vern just follow his heart and then go for it to the maximum. Wish you luck big fella. Freakiest Buckeye I've seen in my lifetime and thats saying alot.

I'm pretty surprised...just look at the guys college video.

Kid is so talented....I wonder what is going on personally? There has to be more than meets the eye...just too much ability to be this bad in the NFL.

Actually, that video shows part his problem, IMO.

While at OSU, he could pretty much just use his raw power and strength to straight up overpower the competition and had to rely very little on using skill/technique on shedding blocks. You can't do that in the NFL because there is just way to much strength and talent on the opposing line to rely so heavily on pure power.

I'd say this sums it up as well as anything I've seen. Freakish measurables/speed/strength only get you so far. Something is lacking, and when something is lacking, the nfl will exploit that. Great college player, great Buckeye, just (apparently) not a good nfl player. It happens.

Texans work out Vernon Gholston
Posted by Michael David Smith on September 21, 2011

The NFL hasn?t completely given up on Vernon Gholston yet.

Gholston, the No. 6 overall pick of the 2008 NFL draft, worked out for the Texans on Tuesday.

The fact that the Texans worked Gholston out doesn?t mean they?re close to signing him. Teams work out players all the time, and Gholston was one of six players the Texans worked out on Tuesday. The others were defensive end Keyunta Dawson and linebackers Antwan Applewhite, Alex Hall, David Vobora and Cyril Obiozor.

But it?s noteworthy that even as unproductive as Gholston was with the Jets, and even after the Bears cut him in training camp, NFL teams are at least curious about what he has left. Gholston is a great athlete who?s still only 25 years old. There may still be a place for him in the NFL.
