Deaths Of Notable Sports Figures (R.I.P.)

Is soccer a sport? Do those who engage in that activity qualify for this thread?

just wondering because I’m sure some snooker or darts or women’s water origami HOF types have died recently. No one is posting it.

WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson passes away

WWE is saddened to learn that Pat Patterson has passed away at age 79.

A true trailblazer of the industry, Patterson was linked to many “firsts” in sports-entertainment throughout his storied career, including the first-ever Intercontinental Title reign and the creation of the Royal Rumble Match. In a career spanning six decades, the renaissance man left an indelible mark on the industry in the ring, on the microphone and behind the scenes.

Patterson began his career in 1958 in his native Canada before becoming a fixture in the Bay Area for nearly two decades. After winning the AWA Tag Team Championship with Ray Stevens in 1978, Patterson moved on to WWE. Under the tutelage of The Grand Wizard, Patterson made an immediate impact and became the first Intercontinental Champion in September 1979. Patterson’s most legendary WWE rivalry was undoubtedly his war with Sgt. Slaughter, which captivated the WWE Universe with Boot Camp Matches and a brutal Alley Fight at Madison Square Garden.

Former Texas head coach Fred Akers dies at 82

Fred Akers, who served as an assistant coach at Texas under Darrell Royal and succeeded the legendary head coach at the helm of the program for 10 seasons, died Monday at the age of 82, the school confirmed. In his time as head coach of the Longhorns, Akers posted an 86-31-2 record and led Texas to a pair of Southwest Conference championships (1977, 1983).

Only Royal (167 wins) and Mack Brown (158) racked up more wins as the program’s head coach than Akers and only Royal (.774 winning percentage), Brown (.767) and Blair Cherry (.756) posted better winning percentages than Akers (.731) among the 11 men to serve as Texas head coach since the Associated Press poll began running continuously in 1936. Over his 10 seasons on the job, Akers guided the Longhorns to six AP Top 25 finishes, including four top-10 rankings and two top-five finishes.

Former University of Alabama football coach Ray Perkins died Wednesday morning in Tuscaloosa.

Current Alabama head coach confirmed Perkins’ death on Wednesday’s SEC teleconference, offering condolences to the Perkins family and describing Perkins as “a really, really good person and a really good friend.”

Perkins, 79, was a star receiver at Alabama in the 1960s. He went on to become the coach of the New York Giants, then surprised the football world twice, first by leaving New York to replace Paul W. “Bear” Bryant as the Alabama coach following the 1982 season, then by leaving Alabama to return to the NFL in 1986, when he took the head coaching job in Tampa Bay.

He was also the coach at Arkansas State for one season, 1992.

Hall of Famer Kevin Greene, third all-time in sacks, dies at 58

Hall of Fame linebacker Kevin Greene, considered one of the fiercest pass-rushers in NFL history, has died. He was 58.

Greene died Monday, the family confirmed, as did the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

No cause of death was given.
.
.
.
A two-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl selection, Greene finished his career with 160 sacks, which ranks third in league history behind only Bruce Smith (200) and Reggie White (198). He also had 23 forced fumbles and five interceptions.
.
.
.
He played 15 seasons in the NFL for four teams: the Los Angeles Rams (1985-1992), Steelers (1993-1995), Carolina Panthers (1996, 1998-99) and San Francisco 49ers. He was All-Pro in 1994 and 1996.

Legendary Boston Celtics player, coach K.C. Jones dies at 88

5fe66ca55eb6b.image.jpg

K.C. Jones, who personified winning as a hard-nosed point guard and then coach of the Boston Celtics during a Hall of Fame career, has died, the Celtics announced Friday. He was 88.

K.C. was Jones' given name, although some joked the "C" stood for championships. It was easy to see why.

He played nine seasons in the NBA, all with the Celtics, and won titles in eight of them -- the third most in league history, behind only longtime teammates Bill Russell (11) and Sam Jones (10). That success carried over to his coaching days, when he won three titles (one as an assistant, two as a head coach) during Boston's run of success in the 1980s with Larry Bird & Co.

He also won a championship in 1972 as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers.

His No. 25 is retired by the Celtics, and he was inducted into the Pro Basketball Hall of Fame in 1989.
.
.
.

To this day, Jones is just one of eight players to win college basketball and NBA titles as well as Olympic gold, joining Russell, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Jerry Lucas, Quinn Buckner, Clyde Lovellette and Anthony Davis.
.
.
.
"From winning two NCAA titles to earning an Olympic gold medal to helping the Celtics win eight consecutive NBA Finals during his Hall of Fame career, K.C.'s extraordinary accomplishments and impact will long be remembered," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with K.C.'s loved ones and the entire Celtics organization."

Just sayin": Some people probably forgot (or didn't know) that KC and Bill Russell were teammates at USF.

Not too often does a NBA team get 3 HOF players from the same draft, i.e. Tom Heinsohn, Bill Russel, and K.C. Jones in 1956.

Sihugo Green from Duquesne University was selected first overall by the Rochester Royals. Tom Heinsohn from the College of the Holy Cross was selected before the draft as Boston Celtics' territorial pick. Bill Russell from the University of San Francisco was selected second overall by the St. Louis Hawks and immediately traded to the Boston Celtics for Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan. Three players from this draft, Tom Heinsohn, Bill Russell, and K. C. Jones (picked by Celtics in the 2nd round), have been inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

If somebody likes that post, are they appreciative of bmania11 providing the information, or are they glad that Tommy Lasorda’s died?

I thought about that when I clicked like. Def not happy he passed. I'm a baseball junkie and he was always one of my favorite personalities in baseball
