Ralph Branca, who gave up 'Shot Heard 'Round the World,' dies

Ralph Branca's baseball life will always be defined by one pitch.

Branca, who gave up a home run to the Giants' Bobby Thomson, the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" that cost the Brooklyn Dodgers the 1951 National League pennant, has died at the age of 90.

His son-in-law, former major league manager Bobby Valentine, said that Branca died Wednesday at a nursing home in Rye, New York. No cause of death was given.

Ralph Branca, who died Wednesday at 90, should be remembered for a life of dignity and not one pitch from 1951

branca24s-3-web.jpg

On October 3, 1951, Branca gave up Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard 'Round the World," a 3-run, 9th-inning homer as the Giants rallied to beat Branca's Dodgers 5-4 at the Polo Grounds in a National League playoff game. Thomson's heroics put the Giants into the World Series.

Joe McKnight shot and killed this afternoon in Louisiana... RIP

http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2016/12/terrytown_murder_jpso.html#incart_breaking

A shooting in Terrytown Thursday afternoon (Dec. 1) left a man dead after an argument at an intersection, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

Family members at the scene identified the victim as Joe McKnight, former NFL player and local high school football standout.

The shooting, reported about 3 p.m., occurred at the intersection of Berman Highway and Holmes Boulevard.

A witness, who declined to give her name, said she was leaving a store in the area when she saw a man at the intersection yelling at another man, who was trying to apologize. The man who was yelling shot the other man more than once, she said.

She said the shooter shot the man, stood over him and said "I told you don't you f--- with me." Then he fired again, she said.

The victim's body was on Behrman Highway, surrounded by a shield.
