Nate Thurmond dies at age 74 after battle with leukemia
Former NBA great Nate Thurmond, a tenacious defensive center who played with Wilt Chamberlain and was an iconic sports figure in two cities, died Saturday after a short battle with leukemia. He was 74.
The Golden State Warriors announced the death of one of the team's most iconic players less than a month after they lost the NBA Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games. Both franchises previously retired the Akron, Ohio native's No. 42, and he is an iconic figure in both cities.
Thurmond played 11 of his 14 seasons with the Warriors and retired after the 1976-77 season, one year after leading the "Miracle" Cavaliers to an improbable trip to the NBA Finals.

High school
He played in high school with another future NBA star, Gus Johnson, at Akron Central. Their powerful team went undefeated before losing to Middletown, led by Jerry Lucas, in the Ohio State high school playoffs.
College
Passing up a scholarship offer to Ohio State to avoid becoming Lucas's backup there, the 6'11" Thurmond chose Bowling Green. He was named a first-team All-American by The Sporting News in 1963, and was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors later that year.
