Ivan Koloff, who infamously dethroned Bruno Sammartino, dead at 74

upload_2017-2-18_13-28-19.png

Ivan Koloff, a pro wrestling villain who famously ended the reign of Bruno Sammartino in 1971, has died at the age of 74.

Koloff, nicknamed “The Russian Bear,” quickly became a primary rival to one of the most beloved WWE Champions of all time, Bruno Sammartino. In an infamously memorable instance in WWE and Madison Square Garden history, Koloff crushed Sammartino’s throat with his knee by jumping off the top turnbuckle. This act on Jan. 18, 1971, allowed “The Russian Bear” to cover the WWE Hall of Famer and score an astonishing three-count to become WWE Champion, ending the Italian powerhouse’s record-setting seven-year title reign.

JERRY KRAUSE, FORMER BULLS GM, DIES

Jerry Krause, former general manager of the Chicago Bulls, died Tuesday at 77, the team said. He had been battling a debilitating bone infection.

Krause was general manager during the Chicago Bulls' championship years when they won six NBA titles in eight years in the 1990s.

Chicago Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf released a statement saying, "The entire Bulls organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Jerry Krause. Jerry was one of the hardest working guys I have ever been around, and he was one of the best talent evaluators ever. Jerry played an integral role in our run of six championships in eight years. He truly was the architect of all our great teams in the '90s. I would not have been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame if it were not for Jerry. We will miss him tremendously, and we send our thoughts and prayers to his wife Thelma and the Krause family."

Just sayin': Piersall was best known for his well-publicized battle with bipolar disorder that became the subject of the book and movie Fear Strikes Out.

Just wondering: Did he have any history of concussions, i.e. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)?

Buddy at work was in a text group of friends that knew James. One guy said he spoke to him a couple weeks ago and that was the last he or his family had heard from him too. Sounds like he might have been in a bad state mentally. Definitely remember him and his athletic abilities. Sad.
