We obviously have quite a few members who were/are in the military and some of the locations of where people lived makes it look like we have more vets than I thought.

Were or are you in the military?

I never was. I never considered it when in school except to fly. Since I am blind as a bat that was not an option.

Nope. I considered it and was minutes from actually enlisting in the army right out of high school. The recruiter asked me one last time if I was comfortable with the decision and then I realized that the military just wasn't for me. He was a nice guy, but a terrible recruiter.

Yep, I was in the Air Force from 92-96. I spent my first 2 years in Yokota, Japan. Then I went to McGuire AFB in New Jersey where I was in a mobile unit. I was gone about 300 days a year, but got to see 17 countries in 2 years.

Yes I served the United States of America from 1990-1993 primarily in Germany and a little stint in Kuwait. I was attached to a field artillery unit as the small weapons specialist/armorer. I then attended Air Assault school and became a veritable killing machine rivaled only by Chuck Norris. The military was one of the best decisions I ever made. The chance to get out from under my parents and away from my peer group was exactly what I needed to become a man and make my own decisions, right or wrong.

No

I did consider going to the Air Force Academy out of high school.

How many of you were born in 1959/1960?
I think we are a group that did not have to register for the draft or selective service. I know I had a friends a few years older than me that sweated the draft during Viet Nam. I was too young and then when the registration came back around I did not have to register.

Nope. My Dad always made the military sound bad, which I guess was probably because of his older brother. My uncle quit college (grades I think) and went to Vietnam. Ever since then he has been a huge drinker and smoker, so I think that was part of the reason it was such a turn off for my dad.

Anyways, since I grew up hearing that I would have to join the Army if I didn't get accepted to college, and I was always told that I shouldn't want to go to the Army, I never gave it much thought. I had a good friend go to the Air Force Academy, and he always complained about the hazing and general BS that he had to deal with. I then had another good buddy quit college and join the Air Force, so I thought about it for a little while then, especially since my grades tanked due to excessive partying.

After hearing all of the stories from my buddies, I figured I was too strong willed and mouthy to successfully handle that environment, since i envisioned myself getting in trouble with a commanding officer every day. So I switched universities and focused on my studies instead.

Served in the US Army. Wasn't even thinking about it until a recruiter showed up at my door when I was about 22. He said a friend of mine had given him my name when asked if he knew of anyone not going anywhere in life. Made me really look at my life up to that point. Asked the recruiter what was the least amount of time available. When he said 2 year 17 weeks I really started considering it. Decided might as well. Did my basic at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and was stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. 1995-1997 And am definitely proud to say I served our country.
