Good breakdown.

#3 is the correct answer.

Obviously there are certain football staff members that will be on the business end of thourough reaming from UFM.

Steele your supposition is wrong. Not all sites had or ever have the exact same information/sources.

you make me laugh. jamel turner is laughing as well, since he's actually alive.

I think there are 3 possibilities for what happened here:

1.) Bucknuts observed the cheering and hugging that every other site did at the camp (which I will say is likely a commit) and ran with it as proof of a commitment in an effort to get the story first. The commitment story contained no quotes from the player or his high schools coaches or anything of substance except Kurelic's anonymous "sources".

2.) Holmes did commit to the staff, and the staff leaked it to Bucknuts and the other sites but told them to sit on it until the kid was ready to announce. All other sites obeyed by this, but Bucknuts decided to run it anyways. As evidenced by Jalyn and his mother's tweets, neither were ready.

3.) Holmes did commit to the staff, and the coaches leaked it exclusively to Bucknuts and told them to run with it. The kid wasn't ready, and the staff screwed up by giving the green light to Bucknuts.

So 2 of these 3 options make Bucknuts look extremely unprofessional, and one (the last one) seems very, very unlikely given that the staff would be risking their entire relationship with the kid just to give Bill Kurelic a scoop.

(My guess is Door #1)

Or #4, Sucknuts reads the scout insider board and tries to get the story out in order to show some sort of credibility.

So why was the story retracted and 247 is no longer listing him as a commitment?-Because the family didn't want it to go public.

And why is the family upset as indicated by their reaction on twitter? -Because the family didn't want it to go public.

I submit your faux outrage is misguided.
If the family is upset, they should be upset at the football staffer(s) who leaked the news (if they indicated to said staff members to keep it on the dl).

These staffers should of kept their mouths closed or at least qualified their intel with a "let it come from the kid/family before you run with it".

Bucknuts jumped the gun on a story and made clowns of themselves yet again. They have done this in the past and have an established record of similar instances of unprofessional conduct.

Instead of manning up and admitting a mistake, they and their minions are attempting to throw an unnamed "staffer" under the bus for leaking the information- which is an angle that is highly detrimental to the team, by the way.

The timing of the Bucknuts report occurred while the coaches, player, and family in question were still at the camp. No one of any importance could have been contacted in the amount of time that it took for the story to go up. If someone of importance had been contacted, obviously the story would never have gone up in the first place.

A ball boy on the sideline doesn't count as a "staffer"... everyone else at the camp saw the exact same things and yet no one else ran with a story because no one else operates on the clownish level that Bucknuts does.

Kurelic hurt his reputation with this story and no amount of backpedaling or blame shifting will change that.

Split, please?

"jamel turner is laughing as well, since he's actually alive."

Exhibit A of why you should recuse yourself from this discussion.
Frankly, you have earned the right to sit it out.

They didn't initiate the erroneus report on Turner, the merly reported and mentioned the source (where it came form).

Addious BP, I'm taking my talents back to bucknuts (far and away the premier pay site on the intraweb).

I'm disappointed. I thought this board was better than this, a bastion for well reasoned, logic based discusission. Sans the hair-pulling banter.

and PS:
Anybody that references the "Scout Insider Board" earns an instant ignore from me, but it does provide me with a frame of reference for what I'm dealing with.

Doesn't matter. When it comes to someone dying, you have to be 100% sure that it's true.
You don't report what another site is saying, because whether it's true or not, it gives validity to that report and readers will interpret as such.

SB Nation@sbnation Update: Bucknuts has since RETRACTED the report that Jamel Turner has died. He is still in critical condition. More information coming...

If you have to retract a story about a kid's death because he's still alive, you're a failure, plain and simple.

Similarly, you don't report a commitment before talking with the coaches and family involved to avoid the exact situation that happened yesterday.

Even if a "staffer" (aka ball boy) saw something and told you about it (once again, the timing was such that there was no way that even a "staffer" could have talked directly with any coaches or family involved) you still don't run with it if you aren't a total joke trying to increase your non-existent "bonafides" by reporting something first.

It's called professionalism and Bucknuts has demonstrated time and time again that they have none.

On BP, we use better sources than a poster on a message board with a less than stellar reputation saying "trust me on this one". If you don't want to go into detail about what happened, that's fine, but don't pout like a spoiled little kid if nobody believes you. You can get away with that garbage on other sites, but you will get called out for it on BuckeyePlanet.

...says the guy who speaks of credibility while simultaneously and incessantly referring to himself in third person (and in substandard English).

The phrase "trust Cdiddy on this one" is one of the major reasons that I have not glimpsed a Bucknuts board in years now.
