DL Rashad Frazier (Official Thread)

IIRC, since he was on scholarship at another B1G school, he cannot be on scholarship here and will have to remain a walk-on. At least that's how I remember it was with JOsh (?) Kerr, the LB who transferred from Indiana quite a while back. Since we will have to sit out the 2012 football season, and he redshirted the 2010 season and did not see any game action in 2011, he'll have two years of eligibility left.

You forget Justin Boren, the gift that keeps on giving.

That rule doesn't exist any longer.

That restriction was finally rescinded this year, but there is loss of a year of eligibility.

So he's on scholarship then?

From the above article:

...due to a rule change, which went into effect this school year. The rule allows athletes to receive a scholarship after transferring between Big Ten schools. Here's how it works:

If granted permission from the first Big Ten school to transfer elsewhere within the league in any sport, an athlete could receive a scholarship immediately, said Chad Hawley, Big Ten associate commissioner of compliance. But the athlete must sit out a year and would be charged with a season of competition, thus losing a year of eligibility.

Therefore, if an athlete transferred after a sophomore season, then sat the following season as a transfer between Big Ten schools, he/she would be a senior before stepping back into competition. Prior to the current school year, transfers within the Big Ten forfeited all scholarships.

According to NCAA rules, an athlete who doesn't get permission to transfer must sit out that first year without a scholarship but could receive a scholarship after the year is completed.

So, if he had permission to transfer, he's on scholarship this season although he cannot compete. If he didn't have permission, then he's not on scholarhsip this year but could be next year. We can assume he did have permission.

When at Purdue, he redshirted in 2010 and did not receive any game action in 2011. He will sit out the 2012 season to play for us. Former 3* prospect and the #46 overall recruit in Ohio as a HS senior.

Based on Rashad's resume compared to the players Urban is recruiting for the D-Line, I think it would be safe to assume he's a preferred walk-on until we here definitively from a respected source.

Frazier has become just as much of a surprise to his new coaches and teammates at Ohio State since joining the squad as a walk-on defensive end this summer.

COLUMBUS ?

Former Middletown High School football coach Jason Krause didn?t exactly think he was looking at an impact player when Rashad Frazier moved into the district as a senior in 2009, showed up for preseason practice and announced he wanted to give the sport another try.

But the skeptical Krause was intrigued by Frazier?s 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame and couldn?t believe his luck when he put the newcomer in pads and watched him overpower the competition.

?His football knowledge wasn?t great. He literally hadn?t played football since third grade. But athletically, the first day we put him down in a stance, he naturally just lined up properly,? said Krause, now the coach at Fairfield. ?He possessed aggressiveness and athleticism. Some kids just have it, and he had it.?

?I?ve been doing this for a long time, and you get move-ins, and nine times out of 10 those move-ins aren?t going to help you much. But since then, I make the joke, ?I hope we get a move-in like Rashad Frazier this year.? But it doesn?t happen. He?s a special talent.

Frazier, who has bulked up to 270 pounds, said he?s paying his own way with the help of some need-based financial aid, and Krause isn?t surprised his prot?g? would give up a full ride to wear the Scarlet and Gray.
?As we went through the recruiting process, he?d say, ?Coach, have you heard from the Buckeyes? Have you heard from the Buckeyes?? You?ve got Michigan State, you?ve got Purdue, you?ve got West Virginia, you?ve got Indiana ? you?ve got major-college football. But he just always kept asking, ?What about Ohio State??? Krause said.
?He called me periodically (from Purdue) and said, ?Coach, I don?t know if this is the place for me.? He always had that ?wanting to be a Buckeye? thing in his heart.?

Rashad is certainly an interesting player. Moved from Maine to Middletown as a senior, came out to play football for the first time since 3rd grade, blew up and had a huge season earning numerous local honors. That single season garnered enough attention for Purdue to offer a scholarship...but his heart was always Ohio State.

He's a fantastic athlete who is as raw as they come and his ceiling is potentially very, very high.
