DL Willie Mobley (transfer to Orange Coast, Arizona and NMSU)

Taylor said Willie Mobley, a 6-3, 240-pound defensive end who transferred to OCC from Ohio State, but never gained his eligibility to compete for the Pirates in 2009, is working out with the team. Taylor said Mobley, who had originally planned to play at UCLA next season, has instead committed to Arizona. But if he can not meet eligibility requirements to get into Arizona, he is expected to play for OCC next season, Taylor said.

Arizona loses both starters at the defensive tackle position from the 2009 team, so it was essential for UA to land some players in the 2010 recruiting class that could come in with the potential to make an immediate impact along the defensive line.

One of the Wildcats' highest rated recruits is 6-foot-2, 275-pound defensive tackle Willie Mobley from Costa Mesa (Calif.) Orange Coast Community College.

Idle for too long, Mobley all set

The Arizona Wildcats will open the football season in eight days.

Defensive tackle Willie Mobley can't wait - and he's used to playing the waiting game.

"It gives me the chills a little bit," he said. "I've been waiting to play my first college game since I graduated from high school. It's taken a while, but I'm glad this happened. I needed it."

The Wildcats' Week 1 game against Toledo will mark the end of Mobley's three-year, four-school journey - and he hopes will start a promising career.

The Eden Prairie, Minn., native began his college career at Ohio State, where he redshirted in 2008. Mobley transferred to UCLA last August, only to be told his Ohio State credits were too few to get him into school. He spent last fall at Orange Coast Community College but did not play football, preserving an extra year of eligibility.

The 6-foot-2-inch, 277-pounder signed with the UA in February, in part because of his relationship with defensive tackles coach Mike Tuiasosopo.

Mobley, 20, will back up starter Sione Tuihalamaka at defensive tackle. He replaces Jonathan Hollins, who quit the team last week and has since enrolled at Texas Southern.

"Everything happens for a reason," Mobley said. "Coach Tui was a great guy the whole time. My mom and I just knew this was the right place. When (UCLA) told me the bad news, really, it was good news."

Arizona Wildcats' Willie Mobley tears ACL playing basketball
Anthony Gimino - May. 23, 2011
tucsoncitizen.com

The ACL hits keep coming for the Arizona football team.

Junior defensive tackle Willie Mobley suffered an ACL tear playing basketball at the student rec center, and will undergo surgery this week, a UA official confirmed Monday.

Mobley played sparingly last season, appearing in 10 games and making seven tackles, including 1.5 for loss and a half-sack. He was slated in the spring to be a backup to sophomore Justin Washington, who had 11.5 tackles for loss and six sacks last season, earning Freshman All-American honors.

Mobley began his career at Ohio State, redshirting as a freshman in 2008, before transferring to Orange Coast Community College in Costa Mesa, Calif., where he did not play in 2009.

Former touted recruit set to play Gophers
Minnesota recruited Willie Mobley out of Eden Prairie High School, but Mobley chose elsewhere.
By Nate Gotlieb
September 05, 2013

New Mexico State defensive lineman Willie Mobley was a nationally recruited defensive lineman at Eden Prairie High School.

About six years and four college stops later, Mobley, 24, will take the field this Saturday against the Gophers — a team that once heavily recruited him.

“It’s kind of crazy how it all worked,” Mobley said.

Mobley was a highly touted recruit as a junior at Eden Prairie. He helped the Eagles to back-to-back state championships his junior and senior seasons and was one of the highest-ranked recruits in the state.

During that time, Mobley narrowed his college search to two schools — Ohio State and Minnesota.

Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant said he encouraged Mobley to attend Minnesota, but Mobley said he chose Ohio State because of his visit to the campus.

Mobley’s mom, Roxanne Golbabie, said Ohio State was also recruiting some of his friends. She said the school also offered strong academic support.

“While he was in high school, [Ohio State] came to Minnesota once a week,” she said. “They just wanted to make sure he did well in school, and that kind of appealed to Willie.”

Mobley traveled to Columbus, Ohio, for his first year of college, but he injured his shoulder on the first day of practice.

He redshirted the 2008 season.

That year, family issues prompted Mobley to rethink his college decision. His mom was having financial and health difficulties and decided to move to California to escape the cold weather.

In response, Mobley attempted to enroll at UCLA, but his credits from Ohio State didn’t transfer.

“Everything just fell apart,” Golbabie said. “Coming from Ohio State, he expected all his credits to transfer, and unfortunately they didn’t. And at the last minute, he was informed [UCLA] could not get him in.”

Mobley enrolled at Orange Coast College in 2009 and didn’t play football that season. He wanted to get back on a football scholarship, Golbabie said, but he had to earn an associate degree to do so.

She said Mobley was 41 credits short of the degree when he enrolled at Orange Coast but earned it in two semesters and transferred to Arizona.

Mobley played sparingly during the 2010 season at Arizona, finishing with seven tackles, including a half-sack. He injured his knee the next spring and sat out the 2011 season.

He returned for the 2012 season, recording 20 tackles as the Wildcats went 8-5. He graduated with an economics degree after the fall semester and could have played one more season at Arizona, but head coach Rich Rodriguez didn’t renew his scholarship, Golbabie said.

NMSU expressed interest in Mobley, and five weeks into the spring 2013 semester, he enrolled in a master’s program there. Still, Mobley needed to obtain a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA to play football in 2013 — a process Golbabie said took about four months.
