Doctorate for Bob Dylan
Wednesday, June 23, 2004 Posted: 2:08 PM EDT (1808 GMT)

Dylan has accepted only one previous honorary degree.

St. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) -- Bob Dylan accepted an honorary doctor of music degree Wednesday from Scotland's oldest university. He was speechless, but a professor at the University of St. Andrews sang his praises.

"Many members of my generation can't separate a sense of our own identity from his music and lyrics," said professor of English Neil Corcoran in an awe-struck address.

Dylan's fusion of folk, blues, country, rock and poetry, Corcoran said, "moved everything on to a place it never expected to go and left the deepest imprint on human consciousness."

"His magnificent songs will last as long as song itself does," he added.

Founded in 1413, St. Andrews, northeast of Edinburgh, is Britain's third-oldest university and one of its most prestigious. Its current students include Prince William, second in line to the throne.

The university also awarded honorary degrees to Harvard philosopher Hilary Putnam and Cheryll Tickle, one of Britain's leading biologists, along with degrees for 180 graduating students.

Dylan has accepted only one other honorary degree, from Princeton University in 1970.

They should have something else, other than Doctorate, for Dylan. He should get a "Shakespeare" or something perhaps named after him. Something beyond Doctorate. Anyone can study for a doctorate. Heck, Kent State, I know a lot less prestigious, gave Joe Walsh a Doctorate a year or two ago. Then he writes a song where he "picks up the dog doo/ hopes that its hard". I'm losing myself a little here, but somewhere I was attempting to make a point about creativity of the course of an extraordinary lifetime.

What you mean to say is...

"I would not feel so all alone-a... everybody must get a diploma!"

-or-

"I'm making records, my fans think I'm great.
After my name are some letters - a Ph.D. from Kent State"

Bob Dylan Awarded Nobel Prize in Literature

The singer and songwriter Bob Dylan, one of the world’s most influential musicians, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition,” in the words of the Swedish Academy.

He is the first American to win the prize since the novelist Toni Morrison, in 1993. The announcement, in Stockholm, was a surprise: Although Mr. Dylan, 75, has been mentioned often as having an outside shot at the prize, his work does not fit into the literary canons of novels, poetry and short stories that the prize has traditionally recognized.
