actually leather furniture is best... hair slides off... and it's almost indestructible vs cloth furniture will snag and retains shedding...

BTW crates can be a very good thing for pets... it will be their safety zone... I leave the door open because the collie always goes in there for her naps... plus on trips it's much safer rather than a loose dog being thrown in a rapidly stopped car...

dachs were bred to find badgers... so they dig... and that body is perf to go burrowing in a hole... and badgers are mean, thus the dachs are very brave little cusses... it's not uncommon for a dach to refuse to back down to another animal...

I've got a mutt... part lab, collie and German shepherd, he's about 85lbs. He's a great dog... very gentle and is great with the kids. His name is Bayliss but he has several nicknames... we mainly call him Bay now because that's what my kids call him ....they can't say his whole name yet. He's named after a character on the old NBC show Homicide: Life on the Street. I wanted to name him Brutus but I had a German shepherd growing up with that name so I figured it should stay with him. I also had a black lab that was a great dog.

exhawg and thump....sounds like the problem is the dog owners, not the dog. I understand the smell thing, that is why I clean everyday...vac, dust, carpet freshener, candles, etc....I guarantee my house doesn't smell like dog. I actually ask non-dog owners when they come in and they say "no, i cant believe it" But I am a very clean person when it comes to my house. Anyway, I have 3 Labs...Macey (black) Scrapy (choc) and Jake (yellow) All 3 have unbelievable personalities. Very smart. I couldn t imagine them not being around. For the most part they are very well behaved, if they start acting stupid when people are around, they go to the garage.

Own a rescued German Shepherd/Black Lab mix named Casey after Sean Casey from the Reds.

She's a little ornery, but great with kids and has an incredible personality.

I also have owned a Golden Retriever, if you can find a properly bread one they are great too. Definately the best dog for families.

I've got a Pyr, he is lazy, and sheds alot, my wife hates him

He makes her get up to let him out on the weekends, never me, only her, it cracks me up. Now if I could only convince him that laying down in a mud puddle isn't the most fun thing in the world I would be getting somewhere.

Oh, and my kid named him "Buckeye"

I have a golden retriever named Barley. They are wonderful dogs, for the most part. They just need lots of attention -- they're needy! He knows lots of tricks, but my favorite is when you say "Michigan," he grabs a stuffed animal and shakes the shit out of it.

From experience, the best dogs are lab mixes. Great dogs!

I'm on the lab train. And I mean that in a very non-Tibor way. I have a chocolate, named Oscar, that is the shit. I also recommend the leather furniture. Oscar is a short-haired lab, and sheds very little, but you can't even tell I own a dog from looking or smelling my house. Additionally, he is extremely intelligent and very well behaved. He doesn't bark unless threatened or is playing, and listens to everything I say. I don't blame the dog when it is out of control and doesn't listen to commands...I blame the owner. You have to be firm, and not be afraid to smack the dog around (within reason, of course). But even more importantly, you need to exuberantly praise and reward it when it does something good.

Labs are fantastic dogs - if your furniture and anything else they can get ahold of can survive the first year!We got an American Eskimo dog and then about a year later got a black Lab.
The Am Eskimo is about the smartest dog I have ever seen, but we love Belle, the black Lab, to death - she is gorgeous and has a great personality. she can be a little stubborn sometimes, too.
If anyone is looking for a small-medium sized dog, the American Eskimos are great. They absolutely love the snow. The males are better-looking than the females due to the "mane" that they grow. they like to dig, too. I feel sorry for our male Eskimo, since my wife and our oldest son named him "Snowflake" (he's solid white, but c'mon! - he's a guy!)

Greyhounds and Whippets are very cool dogs if you have the room for them to run - which they need to do or they will drive you crazy and wreck the house.
They are pretty high-strung and usually pretty "nervous" around strangers.

here's one to post to memory... after 101 Dalmations there has been a huge rush for Dalmations... bad move... statistically the #1 biters are Dalmations... they're very nervous, especially around kids.. their bites aren't the nasties like Rotts or Pit Bulls... but they lead in quantity... they snip at you...

with kids, Golds generally are statistically the #1 choice...

I'm partial to German Shephards too... had one growing up but never had one since married.. too big for inside pets... my C-bus bro-in-law is a magician when it comes to training his Shephards.. he trains them in German and they are damn near flawless obedience...

My male sheltie is a snob.. brilliant.. adores elderly.. prefers kids go away... female blue merle sheltie is gorgeous... and a scatter-brain... could be a result of too close interbreeding... female collie is a show dog... doesn't listen to anyone around the house... loud, continuous, piercing bark... but very athletic and fun... amazing in the ring... must be genetic that she completely comforms in the ring... she just knows its showtime.. and all three have more rights than I do in the house... and eat better...
