    • Grand River's Coach Don Shula passed away this morning at the age of 90.

    As a youngster, Bill Walsh and Don Shula were the first coaches I really became a "fan" of.

    Seems unlikely his 328 wins will ever be matched. His biggest threat is Belichick, who currently sits at 273 at 68 years old and with no Tom Brady. He'd need to average 11 wins per season for the next 5 years to get there. Could happen if he sticks around long enough, but it's far from a sure thing.

    RIP, Coach.
     
    A true hero in my hometown. Grand River is a sister Village to Painesville. Don went to Painesville Harvey High School but would have gone to my school (Painesville Riverside) except that it was built a year after he graduated. Don had a cousin that lived three houses down from me growing up, and was visiting them the day of my High School Graduation party. He saw the signs and actually stopped by just to say "hi" and "congratulations" to me. Chills that I still feel to this day. The Dolphins were always a very close second to the Browns in our area. It was an easy relationship between him as the Coach and punter Tom Orosz from Fairport playing for them as well who was also our Buckeye punter in the late 70's. Painesville Ohio hasn't produced much in terms of famous athletic figures so we kinda stole Don from Grand River and Tom from Fairport. Our greatest, however, was John Mummey who was one of our "three headed Quarterbacks" back in the early 60's. Dons passing is sad, buy what a full life he lived. RIP Coach. Now go find find Coach Hayes. I'm sure you two have some stories to tell each other.
