DT Garrett "The Gladiator" Goebel (official thread)

Meet a Buckeye: DT Garrett Goebel
By Tim May
The Columbus Dispatch Friday October 21, 2011

DEFENSIVE TACKLE // GARRETT GOEBEL

Age: 22

Year: Junior (fourth year)

Vitals: 6 feet 3, 290 pounds

Hometown: Lombard (Montini), Ill.

Major: Construction Systems Management

He was a two-sport star at Montini Catholic High School in the Chicago suburb of Lombard. He was one of three finalists for Illinois Mr. Football in 2007 as a defensive lineman on a team that went 9-2 and made the state playoffs. In wrestling, he won the Illinois high school AA heavyweight state championship in 2007 and 2008 in Assembly Hall at the University of Illinois, across the street from where the Buckeyes have beaten the lllini last year and this year. Goebel also has excelled in the classroom, being named to the Big Ten all-academic team.

Q ? What are the thoughts in seeing Assembly Hall in which you achieved wrestling greatness?

A ? You look over and you think of some good memories. I didn?t really say anything to anybody about them. I just thought about them.

Q ? But now tell people, what memory sticks out?

A ? Just winning state. The thing I really liked about the tournament was the grand march, where they turn out the lights and have the spotlights going all over the place. Everyone was all fired up. The fans were yelling and screaming. To be down there in that, it?s pretty cool. I?ve gone back there the last couple of years for the state championships. I?ve seen it something like eight times, and it still definitely pumps you up.

Ohio State Buckeyes cement nose tackle Garrett Goebel's status by naming him captain

Buckeyes nose tackle Garrett Goebel (53) is described as an "unsung hero" by assistant coach Luke Fickell.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? There's a story about Garrett Goebel pushing concrete in a wheelbarrow for his dad's construction business -- while in elementary school. At Ohio State, though, where Goebel is entering his fifth season in the football program, not a lot has been said about Goebel, by him or anyone else.

Not exactly the path you might expect for a captain.

"I didn't know Garrett the first four months I was here," first-year OSU coach Urban Meyer said. "He's a quiet guy and he doesn't look real good when we were running around cones. But he plays really good as an inside guy. I love the guy. He's who we want at Ohio State, just a tough guy, no-nonsense, that plays hard."

Strong words from the head coach. Goebel also has the endorsement of the president of the OSU chapter of the no-nonsense club. It's an endorsement that said Goebel's announcement as one of five OSU captains this week was the most natural thing in the world.

"You'd have to be dumb to not vote for Garrett Goebel," said John Simon, a fellow senior on the defensive line. "What he does every day, just coming in and putting his head down and going to work, he's a lunch-pail guy. He does what he has to do, and does more than he has to do. He's s selfless person and does what he has to for the team."

Ohio State's Goebel bashfully steps into captaincy spotlight

OSU defensive tackle Garrett Goebel sacks Toledo quarterback Austin Dantin during a 2011 game between the Buckeyes and Rockets on Sept. 10. OSU won, 27-22.

An admittedly shy Garrett Goebel blushed when first-year Ohio State coach Urban Meyer announced him as one of five captains to lead the Buckeyes this fall.

?I walked out there and my face got red,? the fifth-year senior said bashfully.

For Goebel, the attention ? the mere notion of interest ****? is arguably a novelty.

So is dealing with reporters, photographers and the hot lights from camera crews trying to get their scoop.

And to the casual fan, the veteran 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive lineman is, in all likelihood, a new face.

While Goebel has made 44 tackles in 39 games for the Buckeyes, he?s managed to effectively fly under the radar in Columbus since arriving to campus in 2008.

Now, such potential for innocuity seems to have evaporated as his honor as a captain has vaulted the Villa Park, Ill., native into the frenzy surrounding Meyer?s inaugural season at OSU.

The lack of stardom isn?t something that often crosses Goebel?s mind, though.

?I never really thought about it. I know I was never really too concerned. I just wanted to go out there and play good football,? he said. ?I really don?t care too much about myself or being recognized or anything like that.?

In fact, the active pursuit of being a captain, he said, wasn?t necessarily his aim.

?I mean, I never really thought about it too much. Like, if it happens, it happens ? it?s an honor. If it doesn?t, I?m not gonna get my head down or anything, you know, I?m still gonna go out there, work as hard as I can and lead,? Goebel said. ?But it was just cool knowing that my teammates, you know, thought that highly of me.?

In such a leadership role, Goebel automatically becomes an identifiable name for the Buckeyes ? regardless of how much he likes the commotion around it all.

And while some might wonder how a player with such a reserved disposition is best fit to lead, Goebel said his leadership is best demonstrated with his play, not his words.

?I certainly say that I lead more by example but, you know, I still say stuff to people and, you know, make sure everyone knows what they?re doing and get everyone lined up,? he said.

With guys like Simon, Hankins and Williams on the DL this guy doesn't get enough credit for the work he does. Late in the game he flushed the QB out of the pocket and Williams came up off Bell and made a sack. Williams got all the credit, but Goebel was the one who collapsed the pocket.
