Vrabel said Hale?s veteran presence as one of the unit?s most experienced members is very important to the defensive line.

?Joel is a veteran for us. He?s been here two years, and this is going to be Joel?s third season. But he?s a veteran for us, that?s how young we are,? Vrabel said. ?Joel kind of keeps everybody together, and keeps them on the right path ? he?s an important cog to what we?re doing.?

While the Buckeyes have big shoes to fill on the defensive line, Hale said he and his linemates are trying to form their own identity this season.

?We?re not here to replace those great guys, those great players,? Hale said, specifically mentioning Simon and Hankins. ?We?re here to make us as best as we can be to help out Ohio State.?

Hale said the window of opportunity with four starting positions available has increased the level of competition among the defensive linemen this spring.

?It brings a lot of competition within the group,? Hale said. ?I feel that with the competition, it makes our whole D-line a lot better. Makes everybody go faster, try harder, everything.?

Ohio State football: Joel Hale emerges to add leadership on defense
By Bill Rabinowitz

Nose guard Joel Hale, batting down a pass against Buffalo, is a leader on a defensive line that replaced all four starters from last season.

Joel Hale didn’t play a snap when Ohio State played Wisconsin last year.

Now the junior nose guard will be crucial for the Buckeyes against the Badgers on Saturday.

“I’m excited,” Hale said. “Finally, a team that’s going to be testing (us). It’s going to attempt to run downhill. Our job is to stop the downhill runs. We’ll be put to the test this week, and we’ll see what we’ve got.”

Hale was ready last year, but he never left the sideline. Senior Garrett Goebel was the nose guard, and all year he handled that job solidly, if unspectacularly.

“Garrett Goebel was doing his job great,” Hale said. “You can’t hate on him because he’s doing his job great. It was hard. I was the guy standing behind Coach waiting to get in. That was my role last year so I can’t complain. But now it’s my time.”

Despite his lack of game experience, the Buckeyes counted on Hale to emerge as a stout force against the run and a leader on a defensive line replacing all four starters.

“I felt it was my obligation to start for Ohio State,” he said. “It wasn’t a goal. It wasn’t a dream. It was, I had to. Otherwise, what am I doing? I’m just a junior who’s going to get moved on. I had to start for the Ohio State Buckeyes, no matter what. I had to lock in. I think I locked in a lot more than I had in prior years. And I’ve got to keep doing it.”

Coach Meyer confirms the move here.

Gleaning from those comments, it sounds like the OL (from left to right) heading into the spring will be: Decker, Hale, Boren/Price, Elflein, and Baldwin. Sounds good to me but I am willing to bet that Lisle and Big Meech will make plenty of noise to make it interesting. Underwood is s huge wildcard of course depending on his health.

Is Dodson even in the conversation at this point?
