Well if he was a complete homer like mark may then he'd get more heat than he already does. All everyone does is cry about Herbie's comments, grow up seriously who cares. It's like listening to Cowherd and getting upset about something he says when all he's trying to do is get under everyone's skin anyway. You guys get all worked up over nothing.

No pun intended but he sure seems defensive in his answers and a little stressed.

I am hopeful the back half of this year's schedule resembles last year with a big improvement on defense. Our D line is better and deeper and we have talent in the secondary even though some of it is unproven. Roby, specifically can't play any worse so you have to think we see a big improvement from him alone. LB is what it is, just make the most of it. I hope Luke takes this bye week to right the ship on a few issues.

I don't think Roby has been half bad. In comparison to AA expectations, maybe. Nonetheless he's been a major contributor against the run, breaking up plays, etc. Abbredoodle had a prolific night partially because Roby was asked to multi-task like hell. Other than that and a few miscues (always going to happen to some extent), he's done alright. A couple plays made against him were just great QB-WR hookups. When we've needed important stops, he's contributed. Would I like to see more? Yea, but I don't think he's been put in a position where he can play to his strengths. I'd like to see him be able to get in receivers faces a bit more at the line of scrimmage, just because I think that's his playing style as a physical corner.
That said, I can also see why they'd have him line up in a pure cover corner style, read the screens, etc. He'd personally be better in press, but the team might need to lean on him in a different role.
I'd have similar things to say of Dorian's contribution. The only time I can remember shaking my head was the Northwestern TD on 3rd and long after we sacked them on 2nd -- he got caught watching the QB, second-guessing his role, and let the receiver get wide open.
The coverage issue starts with the LBs and continues with the Safeties imo. We drop 8 back, and people are still wide open. That's a problem. I have a feeling some of the miscues involving Roby would be fixed if his head isn't on a swivel as much too. The defensive "scheme" isn't bad, though it may not play to some players' strengths (Roby being more physical, Grant and Percy blitzing more ?) What really concerns me the next time we play a tough opponent is how quick everyone jumps on play-action. It's been great for our run defense stats, but we'll continue to get shredded in coverage if everyone's got blinders on anticipating the run every single play.
All that said, I don't think Fickell is doing a bad job. The DL is coming along quite nicely, and I think a lot of the problems are fixable/trainable in the LB corps followed by inconsistent Safety play.

Don't make this go all OSU fanboy on us....

Herbie has gone well beyond the call of duty for being 'unbiased' towards Ohio State. From the jumping on the $EC$EC$EC bandwagon to the being too tired to vote thing in 2010 to the constant sniping back and forth between him and TP, it's clear where that relationship is, and it's not pretty.

But that has little to do with Fick, who I think deserves a lot of credit for sticking it out and working his butt off for a new regime here.

I agree with everything except I think the scheme is bad, our rush 3 drop 8 should be abandoned because receivers are always finding soft spots in the zone and the QB has so much time. I think the defenses identity should be based out of the nickel package (which it is) because of our LB situation. The absence of the blitzes and press coverage is just puzzling sometimes because it's one of our strongest play calls with our d line and I think that's one of Grant's strengths.

The Roommates

Luke Fickell wanted to be a wrestler. He idolized Dan Gable, the godfather of grappling. His family’s vacations revolved around wrestling tournaments. He won three high school state championships in Ohio and went undefeated. Yet Fickell ended up on the football team at Ohio State, where he made 50 straight starts at nose guard.

Mike Vrabel was his roommate. Fickell cleaned; Vrabel cooked. They fought, daily, mostly with each other but sometimes side by side.

Vrabel wanted to coach in Columbus, where he met his wife, a volleyball player at Ohio State; where he made his home during N.F.L. off-seasons while employed by Pittsburgh, New England and Kansas City; where his first dorm room practically nuzzled Ohio Stadium.

Fickell studied pre-medicine, an optometrist in training, and still ended up a football coach. He apprenticed at his alma mater while Vrabel collected N.F.L. tackles, and in 2011, after Fickell took over the program, he hired Vrabel as an assistant.

The result: a 6-7 season.
