DT Luke Fickell (HC Wisconsin Badgers)

Today, my buddy asked me what I thought of our coach and whether I thought we should keep him. I replied "I want for him to be retained and I want him to be an excellent coach".

The question is, will he ever become an excellent coach? If he eventually will, how long will it take? Will he be given enough time?

I wish I knew and I wish the team looked better on Sat.

Frustrating trend, to say the least...

How is that? Can you elaborate on that?
I don't think Woody's personality would go over in today's PC world. He was also known to commit some, um, violations of ncaa bylaws in his day. He has said in books that he would often give his players money when they needed it. That would get anybody fried today.
What are the other reasons, apart from his record, weighing against Fickell? He's definitely done a good job recruiting, recruiting for the school and not just for himself.
To me, and let me make this clear for everybody in the room, my OPINION, is that his resume hardly warrants a top-5 job in America. Aside from the W-L record, the team appears to be regressing, appears a little, um "mentally fragile", he has been outschemed by some coaches that have no business outscheming the coach at Ohio State, and they have played awfully flat against some mediocre competition that past couple of weeks. To me, those are some pretty loud alarm bells. He was given an opportunity to show he can be "the man", and I don't think he has shown that. Some people act like he was given a raw deal, but lets be honest, in what other situation would he even be given the chance to earn the job of HC at tOSU?

As for recruiting, he has done very well with his targets. but, he has never had final say on who those targets are, that was JTs job. So, in reality, Luke's prowess as the main man as a recruiter is pretty unknown. Luke has a lot of positives that indicate "potential"...he's energetic, he's fairly charismatic, he can relate to younger kids, but, there's a lot of questions, in my IMO, to give the guy the job in a pressure cooker like C-bus. You're hanging an awful lot on just "potential". I'm sure Muschamp will come up in response to that, but again, Muschamp had years of experience as a coordinator at major programs. Luke has been an assistant DC for a couple of years. There's a major difference there.

IMO, the people in charge need to find a name coach with a track record. If that is not feasible, and Luke ends up with the job, he will have my full support, but I will be very nervous.

I think Fickell's biggest failure thus far is his inability or unwillingness to put his "stamp" on the offense.

My impression is that he has been entirely hands off and let them do their own thing all season even after it became obvious that Jim Bollman is clearly not cut out to be D-1 offensive coordinator without Jim Tressel holding his hand.

Completely failing to respond to that situation and continuing to be hands off about it is not the mark of someone who is ready to be the HC.

If Fickell is retained as HC, hopefully he can bring in an OC capable of running the entire show with little to no interference... or guidance, from the HC.

Still, with Fickell being an interim coach and having no other head coaching experience, it's a tough sell right now with the team at 6-4.

He actually is not an "interim" coach. He is the head coach with only a one year deal. Same thing, I know, but they dropped the interim title a while back.

Since Preseason polls are a spot on accurate gauge of a team.
Preseason polls are absolutely garbage. That said, I'm pretty sure the consenus expectations amongst Buckeye fans here (myself included) and around the internet was 9-10 wins. Most "experts" felt the same way. The talent is here for that. They look nothing like that right now. No excuse for beating Toledo by only five points given the talent here (not including the suspened), no excuse for the collapse against Nebraska, no excuse for playing as flat and uninspired as they did against IU. No reason to lose to Purdue. The offense is abysmal, and a lot of that is a result of an inexperienced QB and WR corp. But, as stated above, Fickell has not even attempted to do something about it. We get the same "product Bollman" week in and week out. It's not just that they've lost some games, it's how they've looked losing them. That Miami game was one of the most poorly planned/managed games I've seen in a long time. It's how they've looked in some of the wins as well. They looked like they were on IU's level despite the final score. That should never happen by an Ohio state team against a team of 2* players.

Speaking for myself, I'm just looking for a team that looks like an (or a reasonable facsimile) of an Ohio State football team, taht goes out and plays inspired ball every week. We are not getting that, and that falls on the coaching staff, starting at the top.

So answer the question - what were your expectations? 6-4 with two games to play?

I was thinking two to three losses. I was also thinking we were going to get Posey back after the five game suspension. I also thought Bollman could actually be a good play caller. I also thought Bauserman could do enough for move the offense and keep the defense off the field. I would say most people go into the season with higher expectations. Most fans will think that things will go perfectly with no injuries.

Just to add to this--I'm sure everyone saw it on Saturday's telecast, but it bears repeating here: OSU is third to last in passing yards per game this year, ahead of only Air Force and Army (two teams that run the option). That, IMO, is ridiculous whether you have a freshman QB or not.

Exactly, there are plenty of teams out there with Freshmen QB's, including IU. IU's QB looked much more effective in the passing game, even on those timing patterns that Bollman says we are not ready for. If we aren't ready 10 games in, well shame on the staff. I just don't see why we would expect a successful passing game when the types of plays called don't put our QB in a position of being successful more often than not.

Personally, I expected three loses this year with this staff and the player situation and would not have thought we would be at 6-4 with two games to go. With Tress and the situation, IMHO we have 1 loss at this point. Frankly, as bad as it hurts to say it, we could be 6-6 after them. My guess is 7-5.

If you didn't think that was a likely scenario, you were just being a dick. I "predicted" an undefeated season, but I figured a similar season to JT's first. 7-5. Non-BCS bowl. Just beat TSUN. I'd still be happy with that.
