Establishing In-State Residency for College (Ohio)

I am a rising senior in high school, and tOSU is a very strong possibility for where I might go to college. I love their business college (Fisher), and pretty much everything about the campus, so going there would be a great situation for me.

Really the only big obstacle is the out of state tuition (20,562) and in-state tuition (8,667). The first year I would probably have to suck it up and pay out of state, but what I am focusing on is getting the in-state tuition rate for the remaining years.

My grandparents live just outside of Columbus, and so does my aunt and cousins. I know Ohio is tricky about who you are dependent on, and whether or not that is legitimate and been existiting for a year or not, and what sources of income you have.

Would I allowed to be "living" with my grandparents during the summer, and get an Ohio driver's license and the whole deal, and be counted as an in-state student? Could I count them as a source of income, since they are Ohio residents?

Any help is appreciated. There are a lot of legal specifics I have been sifting through, which gets pretty complicated, but if there is anyone here with experiance in this matter, and has gone through it, please let me know. Thanks.

I have no idea how things are now... I can tell you ten years ago that would not have worked...

I might be wrong, however my understanding regarding high school students whose parents did not move to the state of Ohio due to a job change is this:

The person has to live in Ohio 18 months (again could be wrong... it might be 12 months), have a job during that time, and not be a student. If the person is a student during this time they are considered an out-of-state-student for their entire duration.

I would suggest you discuss this with OSU's bursar?s office.

Yeah thanks 27. I had just found that link a little earlier, but i was just taking a shot at seeing if anyone here has had experiance with it. I know in theory it seems like there are things you can do, but im sure there are always things that come up throughout it that some of you may have seen.

When I received in-state status, it took more than just living in Ohio during the Summer. I had to show personal income, state that I wasn't receiving money from my parents to pay for school (I believe there was a maximum $$ amount that I could accept from out of state sources), and my parents couldn't claim me as a dependent on their tax returns.

I did get it. Although to this day, because my parents' business had gone under and I had done really well academically my freshman year, I believe that somebody quietly pulled a couple of strings to ensure that I'd come back for my sophmore year. --another reason that I have little patience for those who constantly whine that Ohio State is too impersonal and bureucratic.

Right, there are a lot of requirements with showing income and sources of living from in-state. But I believe that since my grandparents (and aunt) have been long time ohio residents, getting them to sign an affidavit that im living with them (and not just going to VA all summer) is enough to show "income", or a source of living.
