Everett leads team to a state title

Just wrapped up a great season, leading the Seahawks to a state class 3A title in football. Next up for Everett is to defend the state 3A title in basketball. Not bad for a 15 yr old sophmore.

CLEMSON | The celebrating began in earnest on Saturday night with about 30 seconds left in the state championship game and Myrtle Beach squeezing the last moments off the clock.

It began in the north stands of Memorial Stadium, where the Seahawk faithful waved their yellow hankies, hooting and hollering their collective vapor into the cold night air.

It spread to the sidelines and then, as time finally elapsed and the Myrtle Beach leatherheads joined the ranks of state champions with their 31-21 victory over Chester, the two forces came together in a joyous romp that will be remembered for as long as they talk of this Seahawks team.


First in ones and twos and then in a steady stream, the Seahawk players ran to the stands to celebrate with their fans who had made the arduous trip out here from the Grand Strand, some players even jumping up onto the brick wall in their own Lambeau Leap.

This is what comes of empire building. This is what comes of having Everett Golson as your quarterback.

The sophomore phenom lived up to his billing on the biggest stage, throwing for 231 yards and three touchdowns in bringing Myrtle Beach its fifth state title and first since 1984.

"This is a big step right here for us," Golson said in the immediate aftermath of the victory in which he clearly outdueled and outplayed Chester sophomore quarterback Tony McNeal. "We came out pretty fired up and focused."

One play later, facing a third-and-5 at the Chester 33-yard line and 1:39 left in the half, Golson gave a glimpse of why the Floridas, Clemsons, Ohio States, South Carolinas et al are lining up at his door. (My how it must grate them that they still have to wait two years for him.)

Check out these numbers: Golson's three touchdown passes give him 44 for the year. That's good enough for second place on the all-time, South Carolina single-season record for touchdown heaves list, with only Willie Korn's 53 touchdown passes in 2005 ahead of him.

That was one of, if not the most impressive quarterback film I have ever seen. I honestly believe he could come in and start at some D1 colleges right now. Incredible arm strength, but I was even more impressed with his touch and awareness.

The whole video was amazing, but the most impressive throw I saw was at the 2:14 mark. Drifting left to avoid pressure while keeping his eyes downfield, throwing a laser beam 25 yards back across the field through double coverage into a tiny window. Wow.

I agree that might be a stretch - but man he looks good. Could use some work with his footwork - tends to throw and plant off of wrong foot at times, but arm strength, mobility, and accuracy are already there. Next two years seem to be amazing with QB talent with legitimate interest.

5 star for sure but I had to keep pinching myself to remember I was watching a sophmore film. This is really my kind of QB... he is a good enough athlete to effectively evade rushers and look to get the ball down field. He is always looking downfield for an open man and seems to go through his progressions well. However, I still like Braxton Miller a tad more, just based on potential and shear athletic ability. However, Miller and Golson should be near the top prospects in '11 nationally.

Myrtle Beach-Byrnes sign three-year deal to meet in football

Perhaps the nation's No. 1 team, No. 1 senior and No. 1 junior will all take the field at the same time this September. And they might do it on national TV.
Myrtle Beach and Byrnes have inked a contract to play in each of the next three seasons, starting with a Sept. 4 matchup in Duncan. The Rebels will visit Doug Shaw Stadium in 2010 before a third game at Byrnes in 2011.

Byrnes, the defending Class AAAA, Division I state champion, is likely to open 2009 as the nation's top-ranked team, especially with the return of All-American tailback Marcus Lattimore, quarterback Chas Dodd and a strong supporting cast.
Lattimore, the reigning South Carolina Player of the Year, is considered by many publications as the nation's top rising-senior prospect. Myrtle Beach quarterback Everett Golson has been labeled by several recruiting experts as one of the nation's top juniors.

The coaches believe that alone could be enough to lure a potential TV deal for this year's game.

``There are a lot of storylines,'' Seahawks coach Scott Earley said. ``Lattimore is the No. 1 player in the country, and they'll probably be the No. 1 team in the country.

``But for us it's an opportunity to get better. We're by no means at that level, but I don't think you get to that level unless you play people like Byrnes. Playing Conway all those years and getting our eyes beat out helped us get to this point. Now it's what can we do in the future.''

Myrtle Beach figures to open the season as the top-ranked team in Class AAA, although the Seahawks will have to replace several key components from last year's state championship team. But Golson, a sophomore All-American with a bevy of major-college scholarship offers, returns after throwing for 3,570 yards and 44 touchdowns.

All three games in the series will be played in Week 2 of the regular season. Myrtle Beach dropped West Brunswick (N.C.), which begins a new four-year realignment next fall, from its future schedules to make room for Byrnes. Since West Brunswick was scheduled to visit Doug Shaw Stadium this year, the Seahawks will only have four home games in 2009.

After opening with Carolina Forest and Byrnes next fall, the Seahawks face Class AA state champion Dillon, Hartsville, Conway and Lake City, the only team to beat them in 2008, before beginning the Region VII-AAA slate.

Byrnes has agreed to split the revenue from this year's game with Myrtle Beach. The home team would then pocket all the profits in the final two years of the series.

Earley said the two programs have been trying to play each other for several seasons, but their schedules never meshed. The discusssions were restarted after former Byrnes coach Bobby Bentley resigned his post as the head coach at Presbyterian College earlier this month to become the offensive coordinator at Byrnes. He is also now the district-wide athletic director.

The Seahawks understand the mountain in front of them, but Earley sees the long-term benefits of the series.

``We're by no means going to go to Duncan and beat Byrnes, but we'll get better and the next year Byrnes has to come here,'' he said. ``Plus, it's great exposure for your kids.''

I've seen many great players in the past 10-15 years down here. I am very lucky to be close enough to the program to see Everett everyday in the fall. He is by far the best high school football player I've ever seen (period). Doctors say he will reach 6'2" and will have a frame large enough to carry 215-225. He's much bigger than those May combine numbers indicate. As mentioned above, we will see where he measures up over his last two years when playing Byrnes. Not to knock any of his accomplishments thus far, but Byrnes is a consistent top 15 team nationally and is a program every team in the southeast (excluding Florida) envies. I however, have faith Everett will beat them at least once out of the two times he will play them. BTW, have no worries about him throwing off the wrong foot, ect... , this kid has perfect mechanics in his throwing motion. He can do things most people can't athletically.

Everett's head coach says the QB has verbal offers from North Carolina, Duke, South Carolina, Clemson, Ohio State, UCLA, Arkansas, Florida, Virginia Tech and Tennessee. He wants to play basketball and football in college and will base his decisio n on that. He is favoring North Carolina, Florida and Duke.
