Everett Withers (Off Analyst Texas Longhorns)

I know he is coaching safeties but I'm just curious where his mark will show up from a DC perspective. Thoughts?

On the scoreboard.

Sounds like the defense is returning to the Silver Bullets they are supposed to be, thank God. Attacking and downhill play is what he seems to be preaching for the entire defense and takeaways for the DB's.

Hope you are right. Not sure if the staff will use this approach to motivate but I was thinking about being #1 in total defense and how that would be a great thing to claim this year or at least a top 5 ranking. We can't go bowling but I'd love to be mentioned as the toughest D in the nation, beat scUM and head into 2013 with some major momentum.

Withers Adds Aggressive ?NFL Style? Touch to OSU Defense
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? They say if it?s not broke, don?t fix it.

They also say those who fail to evolve face extinction.

Such is the paradox that was facing Ohio State coach Urban Meyer when he put Luke Fickell in charge of his defense back in January. The Buckeyes had been among the best in the country on that side of the ball since Fickell joined the staff as an assistant back in 2002.

Jim Tressel won a national championship that year on the teeth of his ferocious defense, which treated Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey to a heavy dose of what he was going to see at the next level.

That was not the same defense Ohio State put on the field a year ago. Not even close. Last year?s group was one of the sloppiest, most fundamentally unsound units OSU fans have seen on the field since the last days of the John Cooper era in Columbus.

?It was something we don?t like as a defense. We pride ourselves on going out there and having 11 hats to the ball and there were times last year we had maybe six or seven,? safety Orhian Johnson said.

?We came into it with the mentality we didn?t play the ball we need to and we let those guys down. For our defense to work, we need all 11 hats flying to the football.?

Get it together coach. That much bending is ok for the ACC and N Carolina, but this is Buckeye country and you won't make any friends that way around here.

I still have faith that this defense can get it done. Point them in the right direction and turn them loose on everyone we play!

I could see FSU kicking the tires on Coach Withers for their vacant DC spot.

He knows the ACC like the back of his hand, is from Charlotte, and is an awesome recruiter, especially in the Carolinas. He also did a pretty solid job with UNC's defense while he was there.

As an FSU fan I''d be happy with the hire. I think he could build or at least maintain the current recruiting momentum they have in the state of Florida.

The Mississippi Press - Southern Miss begins interview process in football coaching search

12/6

One of the first four coaches expected to be interviewed was former Southern Miss offensive coordinator Blake Anderson. He served as quarterbacks coach at Southern Miss from 2008-2009 and the offensive coordinator in 2010-11 under Larry Fedora. Anderson, who also interviewed for the job last year, is currently offensive coordinator under Fedora at North Carolina.

Other candidates expected to interview early are Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown, Tennessee-Martin coach Jason Simpson and Indiana University of Pennsylvania coach Curt Cignetti. Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken, Sam Houston State head coach Willie Fritz, Louisiana-Lafayette offensive coordinator Jay Johnson and Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Everett Withers are expected to be interviewed by Saturday.

Anyone know which safeties in the NFL Withers can claim to have coached, especially at the college level? Just curious as he would be Mr. Bell's coach in C-Bus. Not sure how big of a deal that is to a recruit but you would think it would have somewhat of an impact if he had a decent resume.

He had two stud CBs early in Sam Madison (Louisville) and Quentin Jammer at Texas.

Since then, his college work has been as defensive coordinator. Not a lot of high-profile DBs, but here are some NFL picks from the UNC tenure:

2010:
- DL EJ Wilson, 127th
- DT Cam Thomas, 146th

2011:
- DL Robert Quinn, 14th
- LB Bruce Carter, 40th
- DL Marvin Austin, 52nd
- DB Da'Norris Searcy, 100th
- LB Quan Sturdivant, 171st

2012:
- DL Quinton Coples, 16th
- LB Zach Brown, 52nd

Now, these guys didn't all play together because of boneheadedness, but Withers put together a defense that saw 5 Top 52 picks over three years. Donte Moss was another really good college player who entered the Draft early for no reason.

Two more likely top 100 picks this year in DT Sly Williams and LB Kevin Reddick.
