Ex-Minnesota Coach Tubby Smith (official thread)

Ben Howland is a name I haven't heard mentioned...
For good reason. He had no control over that program the past 5-6 years. Given the class he had coming into this season with the transfers they landed the previous couple of years this season was a disaster. His resume is strikingly similar to Tubby's when he was hired...a lot of early success at a blueblood program, followed by a prolonged period of relative mediocrity. I doubt they wanna go back to that well...

Minnesota needs to realize they are Minnesota. They are never going to do better than coach Mason and his yearly bowl games and it is unlikely they will do better than Tubby either.

Thank you...Exactly correct...They will never be serious players for national talent or elite coaching candidates as well...I expect a Fran McCaffery type of hire here, not Fran himself but a Tier B coach...

Minnesota's best scenario for long term success is to luck into a guy who turns into a big time coach while at Minny and then use football/B1G money to keep him.

They're never going to get the hot guy of the moment like Smart on the open market.

That's about it. Minnesota is not a recruiting "gold mine" for either sport; and it is hard to get some top recruits from (say Florida) when your school has no (recent) tradition of winning anything and your campus looks like this for over half the year:

Minny can definitely develop into a Top 25 program, no doubt about it. You can win anywhere in basketball, that's a fact. The two big hurdles are always admissions and the head coach, so to think Minny has to expect "being Minny" is a little absurd to me.

Look at programs that rake in the big time talent that aren't what we'd imagine as "major" basketball schools....UNLV constantly brings in major talent, Marquette, LSU has a fantastic class this year, Arkansas, WVU, Baylor, Oklahoma State, etc. While some of those schools have history with basketball success, some don't. Maybe I'm old because I remember Minny having Bobby Jackson and being a Final Four team with Clem Haskins at the helm.

They play in the Big Ten, they're close enough in proximity to recruit Chicago and have done a pretty good job of it lately, and they've had pretty steady recruiting classes lately.

You can win in Minnesota and win big, all it takes is the right hire.

I would not compare Minnesota to some of those schools that you mentioned just because of the facilities. The Barn is one of the oldest college basketball arenas still standing and one of the reasons why Tubby was let go was because of his inability to raise some funds to get a practice facility built. Also, as Script so aptly pictures above Minnesota winters are brutal and it is not the easiest place to attract kids.

I don't care if they ever get a good basketball program again because I still remember what they did back in the 1970s:evil:

Facilities is a legitimate issue and I totally agree on that but I think that's more of a when and not if issue. It directly relates back to the head coach and I can't see someone like a Bruce Pearl (obviously can't be hired) not being able to have a great spark with boosters and alumni so I think that issue can resolve itself with the right hire.

The weather portion is overrated IMO - like I said, their core recruiting territory is their homestate and Chicago and if they dip into Canada none of those kids are going to be shocked by the winters.

I just don't think it's a program that has to accept mediocrity because they can do better.

The state is producing 2 outstanding players in the upcoming class. While that might not be the norm, it does show that the state can produce talent. Just gotta find a way to keep it.

FIFY.

Minnesota didn't need a new coach. They needed somebody to do the homework.

Look up their historical record. They haven't won a damn thing as a program without getting sanctioned for it. Tubby Smith would do well to find a job just about anywhere else. Minnesota is a basketball graveyard.

Texas Tech contacts Tubby Smith

Texas Tech has contacted former Minnesota coach Tubby Smith about its vacant head coaching position, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.
.
.
.
Texas Tech already has met with a handful of other coaches about the job, including Oral Roberts' Scott Sutton, Southern Illinois' Barry Hinson, New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies, Indiana assistant Steve McClain and former UTEP and Nebraska coach Doc Sadler, who is in his first season as director of basketball operations at Kansas.

Sources said Sadler is still being considered for the job, along with Chris Walker, a former Red Raiders assistant who became Texas Tech's interim coach after Billy Gillispie was forced to resign in September amid allegations he verbally abused players and repeatedly broke NCAA rules by exceeding limits on practice time.

Charley Walters: Flip Saunders turning down the Gophers is embarrassing

The University of Minnesota's search for a men's basketball coach became officially embarrassing when it was learned Saturday, March 30, that Flip Saunders had turned down the job.

Saunders is believed to be at least the fourth coach to say no thanks to Gophers athletic administrators Norwood Teague and Mike Ellis since they fired Tubby Smith on Monday.

Meanwhile, Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin, 42, apparently has surfaced as a candidate, along with Florida Gulf Coast's Andy Enfield.
