F Marc Loving (Agua Caliente Clippers of Ontario - NBA G-League)

Absolutely phenomenal article in The Blade about Loving. I might have my scarlet-tinted glasses on since I'm an SJJ alum and (obviously) huge Ohio State fan, but I think he'll make an immediate impact. He's played against top competition for 4 years, and he's going to set the all-time scoring and rebounding records at one of Ohio's premier basketball schools. What's not to like?

St. John?s Jesuit basketball coach Ed Heintschel and senior Marc Loving have an opportunity to hit major milestones in the same game Friday night.

But it won?t be easy as the Titans host Central Catholic (8-1, 4-1 Three Rivers Athletic Conference), which is ranked No. 5 in Ohio in Division I. The Titans (10-3, 5-1) are ranked No. 9.

Heintschel needs one victory to become the 10th boys coach in Ohio history to achieve 600 career wins. The 6-foot-8, Ohio State-bound Loving needs 26 points to surpass B.J. Raymond?s school career-record 1,466.

Loving became the Titans career rebounding leader (620) in a victory Jan. 4 at Clay, and Heintschel got win No. 599 last Friday against visiting Lima Senior.

Loving?s 19 secures 1,471-point milestone as he leads St. John's to win over Whitmer
BY STEVE JUNGA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

Those who had been waiting four years for a memorable duel between the marquee basketball players from fourth-ranked Whitmer and sixth-ranked St. John?s Jesuit, finally got that treat Tuesday in a Three Rivers Athletic Conference showdown at Whitmer.

Whitmer?s Nigel Hayes (27 points) and St. John?s Marc Loving (19 points) put on a show worthy of the skills that earned them Big Ten scholarships.

The visiting Titans (12-3, 7-1) survived Hayes? superb fourth-quarter scoring surge to escape with a 52-51 victory.

Only when the final 3-point shot from the 6-foot-7, Wisconsin-bound Hayes rimmed out, and the two teams battled for the loose ball in the lane as time expired, could the Ohio State-bound Loving and his teammates breathe a sigh of relief and claim sole possession of first place in the TRAC.

?You saw two Big Ten players playing like Big Ten players,? said Titans coach Ed Heintschel, who picke d up his 600th career win Friday against Central Catholic. ?We?re blessed in our area right now with these two guys, plus Mark Donnal, Jackson Lamb, Jordan Lauf, Vitto Brown, Ricardo Smith, Austin Gardner, and the guys at Rogers.

?This is going to be looked at as a golden era of Toledo basketball. One of the best ever.?

Hayes, who hit 10 of his 13 second-half shots from the field, scored all 15 of Whitmer?s points in the fourth quarter, part of his 23 after halftime.

Hayes did virtually everything he could to lift Whitmer to victory.

?Everything but hit a shot,? he said with a smile. ?Actually, to the naked eye, it looks like a disappointing game for us.

?But, as a team, we reflect on this game and consider how we played against them this second time compared to the first [60-37 loss at St. John?s]. It was an incredibly different game this time, for us and them.?

For his part, the 6-8 Loving secured an individual milestone.

When he sank a 3-pointer with 1:05 left in the third quarter to put the Titans ahead 42-35, Loving surpassed B.J. Raymond (1,466 points, 2001-05) as St. John?s career scoring leader. Loving now has 1,471 points.

Loving, St. John's Titans win showcase against Rogers Rams
BY DONALD EMMONS
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

A City League title wasn't at stake when St. John's Jesuit played host to Rogers on Tuesday night in a non-league contest.

That didn't mean thoughts about best in the city weren't on the minds of those playing in the meeting between former City League rivals before a packed crowd inside the Titans? gym.

That clearly was the case, and St. John's made it clear with an 81-74 victory against Rogers, walking away with Glass City bragging rights.

"It was definitely a matchup of two powerhouse teams from their respective conferences," said St. John's 6-foot-8 senior Marc Loving, who poured in a game-high 35 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. "We felt like we would have to compete the whole game. We knew it was going to be a track meet."

What an odd video. The highlight is that Loving breaks St John's scoring record, you see one highlight of Loving making a shot, and no mention of whether it was the record-breaker, and then pretty much the rest of the video is highlights of Nigel Hayes from the losing team (who scored 8 more points than Loving in the game).

Quick update on Loving's year. He's averaging 20.7 ppg, but looking to distribute the ball more and more as defense are keying on him. Specifically, he "only" put up 12 points last night in a 73-33 (not a typo) win against Findlay. A back-story here is that Loving was out with the flu against them earlier in the year, and Findlay won 61-59. With his return, Findlay's coach tried to run a triangle-and-two zone against SJJ, but Loving adapted by distributing the ball and letting his teammates do the scoring. I keep saying this, but we got a good one.

The article in the link says Marc was only 3-10 from the field in the Findlay game. It was a bad shooting night for him - that happens to everyone from time to time but you can't shoot like that regularly and be a significant player at OSU. Shooting percentage is one of the few stats from high school that has some weight, and 3-10 is not very good, especially when you're taller and longer than everyone else on the court. Hopefully it was just a rare off game, but he has to shoot better than that next year in order to merit a significant role.

Every year we get too excited about freshmen and largely over estimate their potential contributions. However, with the lack of an outside shooter on the current roster I can foresee Loving immediately stepping into DT's spot.

I don't see a consistent outside shooter on the team. Craft? No. Scott? No. Thompson? No. Smith or Ross? Perhaps if they improve.
At least he can make his free throws:)

Backcourt combines for 35 points as Rogers eliminates St. John's in 66-55 win
Blade Staff

Trailing 33-28 at halftime, the unranked Rogers Rams broke things open with a 15-6 third quarter tonight, then continued their momentum to take a 66-55 victory over fifth-ranked St. John's Jesuit in a Division I boys district basketball semifinal at Savage Arena.

Rogers (17-7) got 18 and 17 points, respectively, from the veteran senior guard duo of Clemmye Owens and Tony Kynard in moving on to Saturday's 7 p.m. district final here.

St. John's lost despite 29 points, 13 rebounds, and four assists from 6-foot-8, Ohio State-bound forward Marc Loving. The Titans (20-4), played without standout senior guard Austin Gardner (16-point average), who sprained his right ankle late in the team's practice on Wednesday.

Loving, Heintschel lead all-district picks
By Steve Junga
Blade Sports Writer

St. John?s Jesuit basketball standout Marc Loving and 34th-year Titans coach Ed Heintschel each hit major milestones during the 2012-13 season, and each garnered top honors in this year?s Associated Press Northwest Ohio Division I all-district selections.

Loving, a 6-foot-8 senior forward who will play at Ohio State University, repeated his 2012 selection as D-I boys player of the year after averaging 21.3 points and 8.2 rebounds during the regular season for the fifth-ranked, Three Rivers Athletic Conference champion Titans (19-3).

During the season Loving also became the school?s career scoring (1,649 points before Thursday?s district semifinal) and rebounding (785) leader, and set the St. John?s single-game scoring record with 42 points in a win against Lima Senior.

TOLEDO ? The Glass City has been kind to the Ohio State basketball program.

Kelvin Ransey was an All-American guard. Dennis Hopson was, too, plus he?s the all-time leading scorer in Buckeye history.

Jimmy Jackson was a national Player of the Year, and Neshaun Coleman and William Buford were starters and captains on Final Four teams.

Whether the latest import lives up to the standard set before him, that?s up to Marc Loving.

The 6-foot-8 senior from Toledo St. John?s has all the tools in the shed and all the accolades, too.

A co-Ohio Player of the Year in Division I as a junior, Loving backed that season by averaging 21.3 points and 8.2 rebounds with two assists, 1.5 blocks and one steal. He set the school?s all-time scoring record with 1,678 to go with 798 rebounds and scored 42 points in a game against Lima Senior. Loving shot 61 percent inside the arc and 30 percent behind it, hitting 70 percent of his free throws.

So he?s a natural scorer with a perimeter jump shot and an easy way about him. He has an ability to finish in the lane and draw fouls. Maybe most of all, Loving is a willing passer who can spot teammates when he?s getting double teamed. He plays with an intelligence and an understanding that belay his years.

?He?s got all the skills it takes,? his veteran high school coach Ed Heintschel said after a 66-55 loss to Toledo Rogers that St. John?s all-district guard Austin Gardner missed because of a badly sprained ankle the night before. That late development forced Loving to play more of a perimeter game against a smaller, but physical Rogers team that isn?t short on strength or athleticism.

?He?s very cerebral and makes his teammates better,? Heintschel said. ?We got a lot of great looks in the first half with guys breaking open and that kind of thing.?

Ohio Mr. Basketball: Buckeyes recruit Loving is honored
By Rusty Miller
ASSOCIATED PRESSThursday March 21, 2013

Marc Loving, a 6-foot-8 forward for Toledo St. John’s who is headed to Ohio State, is the 26th annual winner of the Associated Press Mr. Basketball award, emblematic of the top player in the state.

Loving averaged 21.3 points and 8.2 rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the field, 30 percent from three-point range and 70 percent from the free-throw line. A two-time player of the year in Division I, he led his team to a 20-4 record.

Among those he beat out for the award were St. Clairsville’s Dan Monteroso, Luke Kennard of Franklin, Ironton’s Zac Carter and Isaac McGlone of Bloom-Carroll.

Loving joins a list of past winners that includes LeBron James, Trey Burke, Jared Sullinger, O.J. Mayo and Jim Jackson.

It seems that whenever people who know him are asked about Loving, they eventually get around to saying some form of the phrase, He’s such a good kid. He’s also a pretty good basketball player.

Buckeyes coach Thad Matta was asked what he saw in Loving.

“Size, athleticism and his ability,” he said. “He’s very, very skilled for his size. He’s from a great high-school program, and he won a ton of games up there. And he’s a great kid, from a great family. That’s what sold us from the get-go.”
