First week for Big Ten football

Maybe it's just me, but I LOVE seeing conference play open up. The Big Ten top to bottom this year looks solid, with even doormat Indiana upgraded a touch (they're off this week, however).

Despite some high profile losses, which we don't need to get into, the conference has six teams that went unbeaten in "pre-season" (including those crazy Hoosiers). Now it's time to crack some helmets and put some losses in those columns!

The biggest Big Ten contest this week is right here at the 'shoe. Iowa at Ohio State. We've all been waiting for that one since last year, and that's all that needs to be said.

Purdue and Minnesota is another interesting matchup...a good game will have Laurence Maroney's hype-o-meter through the roof, and a win will make Minnesota a lot more legit. Mason's OOC schedule included powerhouses Tulsa and Florida Atlantic, so it will be interesting to see if they're ready for B10 play. Since we don't play Purdue, I guess we root for the Golden Weasels...in vain, probably.

scUM at Wisconsin. This is a battle of the bottle throwers versus the battery chuckers. It's hard to care who wins, though technically we should root for scUM since we don't play Wisky, but it sure would be fun to see their fans on Pay-Per-View in a no-holds barred cage match, huh? My gut tells me that scUM comes out looking unmotivated, since their win against EMU "proved" what a talented team they are. :roll2: I'm expecting to be disappointed in the quality of play in this game for both teams.

Nothwestern got exposed like a girl named "Dixie" at an all-nude club against ASU this past week, and they get to host a Penn State team that's been pounding on patsies in an increasingly aggressive manner. Look for NW to wind up on the receiving end in the VIP room. The outcome of this one is irrelevant, since we play both of them, though it would help for us to play PSU as a ranked team. They're knocking on the Top 25 door right now, hovering at 31st in the coaches' poll.

MSU at Illinois. So far, the Zooker has squeaked past Rutgers, layed the wood to San Jose State, and given Cal a fight for three quarters. With MSU coming down off of a Dome-shattering high, I like Zook's chances of keeping things close with the Spartans. We play both of these teams, so the outcome doesn't matter that much, but again it's nice to beat a ranked opponent. Go Sparty, I guess.

Anyway, looks like a fun first week in the conference. I can't wait for Saturday.

Nice breakdown Brutus, I too would like to play PSU and MSU when they are ranked. I am rooting for all the teams you are pulling for too.
