Game Thread Florida A&M Rattlers at tOSU, Sep 21, 12 ET, BTN

I'm sick of this kind of shit in this country. Every freaking day people are getting worse and worse without the correct repercussions.

I hope Buckeye fans are welcoming this Saturday. This FAMU team has no business being on the same field football-wise but they are still kids trying to get their college degrees. Show them what Ohio State football is all about this weekend. The good sides of it please.

Not sure if it was talked about in the Gene Smith thread, but anyone see a couple of weeks ago his comments as to why we're playing FAMU?

He said Grambling was his first choice, but they couldn't come, so he got FAMU, all because of the band

:smash:

here's the quote

Smith said the original plan was to try to get a game with Grambling, a traditional powerhouse among Historically Black Colleges and Universities and the former home of the late legendary coach Eddie Robinson. When that didn't work out, the Buckeyes turned to Florida A&M. Why FAMU? Because of the band. After a hazing incident that resulted in the death of a band member, the Rattlers' band is just getting back to performing this year and won't be making the trip.

That makes the game kind of beside the point, or as Smith described, “challenging” to get fans interested.

“I'm really disappointed,” Smith said. “I'm disappointed, but I'm not pushing back. I understand

Jesus. The band.

Regardless, I'm ready for the Buckeyes to destroy FAMU so we can get to the meat of the schedule and stop hearing the bitching and whining about the schedule.

Yes, it's weak this year. It would have been much better had we swapped SDSU for Vandy, but OOC is always weak.

tOSU is leading the charge into the new playoff format by actually scheduling tough teams. This season is what it is, and I'm fucking tired of the whining. 1 MAC school, one FCS school, one PAC12 school, and one SEC school is an acceptable OOC schedule, just didn't work out this time. Whatever.

Get that W, and GO BUCKS!

I really don't blame Smith for picking FAMU based on its band. Its band gives FAMU a terrific leg up, from an entertainment perspective, on any of the other sacrificial lambs we might have played. Too bad they won't be here. :shake:

Just sayin': The Rattlers did win the Division 1AA National Championship in 1978 under head coach (and former Ohio State football player) Rudy Hubbard.

Rudy...Rudy...Rudy

Anybody else remember?

OSU-Michigan 1967: Rudy Hubbard shines with 2 TD runs as Buckeyes top Wolverines, 24-14

Coach Woody Hayes of Ohio State went to the cupboard and found Rudy Hubbard.
Hubbard, a seldom-used halfback this season with only 26 carries, provided the big spark with two touchdowns as Ohio State's' resurgent Buckeyes closed out a successful season yesterday with a pulsating 24-14 victory over favored Michigan.

Before a crowd of 64,144 on this pleasant sunny day in Michigan's vast stadium and a regional television audience, Ohio State steamrolled to a 21-7 halftime lead and then fought off Michigan after the intermission to bag its fourth straight victory. Ohio closed out the campaign with a comeback 6-3 record and, on its performance, the 1968 outlook appears very bright.

Hubbard, a senior from Hubbard, Ohio, and an almost forgotten man in the OSU offense, closed out his career in a blaze of glory. Prior to this season, Hubbard had carried the ball only 19 times -- 18 as a junior in 1966 and only once as a sophomore.

That was an understatement.

I can see one side of the coin to playing a D-1AA college, but it doesn't mean I agree with the decision.

The only reason I can stick up for Ohio State scheduling a D-1AA program is if it is an in-state school. If we play a team Youngstown State or Dayton it keeps the money in-state for schools that are home to a bunch of Buckeye fans. The problem is that Ohio is only home to 2 D-1AA colleges, and the Buckeyes don't dare go any lower than D-1AA (nor should they).

Playing an out of state scrub FBS school, IMO, is worse than a D-1AA school. The FBS school knows they will get solid revenue from a strong conference team or two going to a bowl, as well as TV time when playing a bigger conference school (ie. SJSU playing Boise St). If we play a D1-AA school at least they can be assured to get a great pay day and a national TV air time, and maybe it will help the school with recruiting students and/or athletes watching the game.

If it were up to me, the Buckeyes would be playing an in-state low FBS every year, especially if they are going to grab an OOC FCS school. Im sure Bowling Green, Miami, or Akron doesn't have much to lose. Hell, if we can't then go beat up on a school in M*ch*gan like WMU or CMU.
