Future (hopeful) Collegiate Punter wants advice on making college football roster

Sportsbuck28

Here comes the BOOM
Hey guys, I'm currently a sophomore in high school, and I'll be a junior next year (For those not skilled in dates/times, that means I'm in the class of '10). I play football for my high school in Huntersville, called Hopewell. Last year, we went 11-1 (6-0) and won our conference championship. (Now, on the MaxPreps page, it says we went 10-2 (5-1), but the team that won the conference had to forfeit the season due to an ineligible player so we gained a victory and the conference title in the process)

2008 will be my first year on varsity, and I'm a wide receiver/punter. Wide reciever is my main position, but if I want to play college ball anywhere, punting is my best bet. Last year, the coaches son was the varsity punter, while I was stuck on JV starting at WR and punter. Now, at the end of the season the coaches put together a stats sheet for the JV team, and I had 15 punts for 593 yards, which for you math dummies out there averages out to 39.5 yards per punt. So, despite the fact that I averaged 8 yards more than him, I toiled on JV because he was the coaches son and untouchable.

But, he is graduating and I will be stepping into the punting duties for us next year with no competition and I am trying my hardest to maybe get some college attention for it. I stand right now at 6'1 and 155 pounds, and I am doing both weight and flexibility training to improve my overall power and, well, obviously my flexibility which is HUGE for a punter. I don't have to handle kicking duties because there is a kicker in my class who was first team all-conference as a kicker this year (Not to mention being a helluva receiver), so I don't have to worry about that.

Now, here's my question to you guys. How do I improve enough to draw the attention of colleges? I am hitting up as many combines and punting camps as I can this spring and summer in hopes of improving my technique and punting ability as well as getting my name out there to recruiters. I know a lot of us have played high school ball (And I believe HAYN was a punter at tOSU), so I was wondering if you guys had any advice.

Much appreciated.

When did TeddySwimTeam move to NC? j/k

I'm not sure about punting and kicking, but if you put up good numbers you'll get some looks. You might want to look at schools that will have opportunities for early pt. If you don't get offers you can walk on there. A lot of K/P get scholarships after walking on. If you walk on someplace for 2 years they can give you a scholie without counting you under the freshman limit (at least that's how it was when I was in college).

Well, to be honest, I don't even think of it as a possibility right now of earning a scholarship out of high school. You have to be like one of the top 10 best in the country, so I'd fully expect to have to walk-on.

id recommend kicking the ball high, far, and long. possibly some directional kicking may pay off.

sarcasm aside go to some kick camps or something. maybe a pm to one of the mods (grad) as to who has good kick camps to help you improve and to get you seen.

It really isn't too difficult. With Bucky's patented Cozed Technique, anyone can make their college football team. Walk-on to any program you want. Bide your time until the season is just about ready to begin. Stab anyone ahead of you on the depth chart. And voila! Top of the depth chart, baby.

I have no advice, because the last time I tried to punt a football I spent the next six weeks with a pulled hammy. And not a BBQ one, either. But I'm going to change the title of this thread so that hopefully HAYN or someone else with applicable experience will see it and help you out.
