PG C.J. Jackson (Official Thread)

CJ is impressing his teammates with his poise and outside shooting, and in his Buckeye interview session, he admitted he's fine with not scoring at all if that's what the team needs. I have not seen a second of footage on CJ, but he seems poised to come in and get maybe 15 minutes a game, based on position and word-of-mouth.

I think the two biggest questions for CJ were could he play PG at this level (good enough handles/quickness) and would he be a defensive liability. He played mostly PG in HS, but last year in JuCo he spent most of his time off the ball. Also, his JuCo team played almost exclusively zone which made him look lazy on D as he pretty much just meandered around looking to get steals in the passing lanes. I think his instincts for the position and shooting ability are just fine.

Jackson: The 6-foot-1 guard has the benefit of a season of junior college basketball, and that experience showed in the exhibition. He had six assists and no turnovers while playing poised and under control.

He's the No. 2 point guard, and he'll spell Lyle in that role. Unless he forces Matta to start him (and possibly play a two-guard lineup?).

Jackson is already important as the No. 2 ball-handler, but he's potentially the most important player in this group if he cracks the starting lineup.

"He's tough," assistant Chris Jent said of Jackson. "That's the one thing you look for in a point guard is toughness. Jaquan is trying to beat him up a little bit and he's not going away."

C.J. JACKSON PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN OHIO STATE'S OPENING DAY WIN, STEALING SECOND HALF MINUTES FROM JAQUAN LYLE

Coming into the 2016-17 season, many saw JaQuan Lyle as one of Ohio State's most vital pieces. On opening night, however, it was transfer guard C.J. Jackson who stole the show, playing all but three second-half minutes while Lyle sat the bench.

Lyle struggled mightily in the first half on both sides of the ball. The starter managed just three points in the game coming on a corner shot from behind the arc with under a minute to play in the first half. He was also a liability on defense for most of the half.

"Quan was really, really struggling on the defensive end of the floor," said Ohio State head coach Thad Matta. "He was trying to make some home run plays."

With Lyle not getting it done, Matta elected to go with Jackson, the junior college transfer from Eastern Florida State, and his quickness and uptempo game provided exactly what the Buckeyes needed.

"I THINK HE'S A LITTLE ENERGIZER BUNNY." -KAM WILLIAMS

note how jackson regressed to the mean that was established during his season at efsu. comparing his first 10 games at osu to his last 10 is hardly arbitrary. with 9 games left to go in the season, jackson supplanted lyle as the starting point guard. the 24th game of the season was the first game since the first game that jackson had over 23 minutes. from then on, he averaged 29 minutes per game.

overall shooting

efsu season: 170/371 (46%)
osu season: 48/147 (40%)

Men’s Basketball: Ohio State guard C.J. Jackson prepares for heavy playing time in 2017-18

IMG_6175-530x353.jpg

Junior guard C.J. Jackson started nine games last season, his first as an Ohio State Buckeye.

This season, he will be counted on to be the team’s only true point guard.

“The point guard — floor general — just kind of keeps the team together,” Jackson said at Ohio State men’s basketball media day. “That’s kind of what I do right now.”

Jackson’s role and importance increased with the departure of JaQuan Lyle, the third-leading scorer during the 2016-2017 season who quit the team in April and transferred to New Mexico.

Jackson will have help from redshirt senior shooting guard Kam Williams, a returning starter with no in-game experience at point guard. Williams said he and redshirt junior forward Keita Bates-Diop and senior forward Jae’Sean Tate have been honing their skills to adapt to Ohio State’s lack of depth at point guard.

“We all have [worked on ball handling] cause we know C.J. is our only true, true point guard,” Williams said. “So we’ve gathered in the summer to prepare if we’re ever in that situation — so I think all of us will step up and take his place if needed.”
