Game Thread Game Eight: #1 Ohio State 44, Indiana 3 (10/21/06)

Some halftime thoughts...

1. If you have any lingering doubts about JT as an offensive coordinator, consider this: Troy started the game 0 for 4 passing, and looked way off his game. So, what does Tress do? Calls for a screen pass, an easy completion to Pitt which gains a few yards, but much more importantly gets Troy back in rhythm and his confidence up. Then, Troy rips off one of his best runs of the year (29 yards on an option scramble), and finishes the drive with probably his best "touch" pass of the season, the very well-designed and -executed play action pass to Nicol on 3rd and 1 for the TD. After the screen pass, Troy was 11 for 14 with 4 TD's. A great call, and perhaps game-changing one.

2. Brian Hartline might be the skinniest kid on the team, but he might also be the hardest hitter. It seems like every week Hartline has the hit of the game, this time on IU's Marcus Thigpen on a kick-off return. Thigpen didn't return to the game, and is probably still hearing bells and seeing stars.

3. CWells has everything on Pitt - except vision and experience. Pitt is still the man, but expect great things from Wells soon. Maybe he'll have a break-out performance in the 2nd half - it seems like every other Buckeye back has had one against IU, even Lydell Ross.

4. Freeman still has trouble getting to the ball carrier in the open field. He missed two tackles on Kellen Lewis which allowed Lewis to pick up first downs.

5. Richardson has been playing like a man possessed the past two weeks. He simply dominated on his two sacks (both on stunts). BTW, his first sack was a "helmet to helmet" hit, at least by the standards of the Texas game. :wink2:

6. For as "high motor" as Gholston is, he certainly plays screen passes very well. Offenses like to target guys like Vernon for screens and misdirection plays, but he never seems to be out of position.

7. IU's offensive line has held, chopped, tackled, and leg-whipped OSU's DL all game, but to no avail - three sacks, an intentional grounding for about a 25-yard loss, and numerous pressures and hurries, all against a mobile QB. OSU's DL is dominating this season, which was the missing ingedient in the 2005 defense.

8. Props to true freshman Jake Ballard on his first TD catch - great hands and concentration on a tough pass to catch. Many of us thought that Jake would end up at OT, but with soft hands like that, he looks like he'll have a nice future at TE.
