Game Thread Game Eleven: Ohio state 25, Michigan 21 (final)

Seeing all the "whose better" statements through the thread made me go get the stats that were released today. So far, after a full season, here is the breakdown of the two squads and their ranks in terms of positions:

Rushing (Individual):
-Pittman is #5 in the Big Ten with 1110 yards (5.6 a carry)
-No Michigan back cracked the top 9

Rushing (Team):
-OSU is #4 in the BT with 1967 yds @435 carries(196.7 pg)
-Mich is #7 in the BT with 1777yds @433 carries(177 pg)

Therefore OSU Rushing > Michigan rushing

Passing (Individual - ranked in pts & eff.):
- Smith is #1 with 160 pts
- Henne is #8 with 130 pts

Passing (Team - ranked yards per game & total passing yrds):
- OSU sits at #10 with 206 yds pg/ 2006 passing yards
- Mich sits at #7 with 217 yds pg/ 2179 passing yards

This one is pretty tight. Smith is a more accurate passer and can put up more points, but Michigan throws much more (lack of running attack) so Michigan would be a slight favor in passing.

Recievers (ranked by receptions made & RPG):
Holmes is #10 with 42 receptions, 781 yards, 4.2 RPG
Avant is #2 with 70 receptions, 900 yards, 7.4 RPG

This is a tricky one. While Avant gets more touches, Holmes makes more yards per touch. Holmes get 18 yards a reception, whereas Avant only gets 12. Also, with nearly 30 recpetions more, Avant has only garnished a mere 120 yards. This may actually help OSU out in the passing attack as it looks like Holmes splits his touches with the team - Avant is the main sole to their air attack.

Total Offense though goes to OSU as they sit #7 and Michigan at #8. This may sound close BUT Michigan has ran nearly 100 more plays than OSU and still trail by nearly 100 yards. Therefore I would statistically say OSU does have the better Offense as it is shown blakc and white with the numbers and also OSU has 2 losses to Michigans 3.

(Will post up the Defensive stats tomorrow)

"Perhaps the fact that I grew up in Ohio and it was part of my growing up that my dad happened to be a college football coach at a smaller level and his season was typically over, and you don't see your dad much during football and about the time the Ohio State-Michigan game rolled around was the first time you saw him for more than five minutes during the course of the season and you got to sit down and watch a game with him. You can talk about that in all the households in Ohio State and Michigan. It's one of those special things that people enjoy together."

This is why we will kick their asses more times than not!!!!:osu:

Just look at yards per play:

Ohio State: 6.00 ypp (672 plays for 4033 yards)
Michigan: 5.19 ypp (762 plays for 3956 yards)

Our 6.00 ypp puts in at #26 in the country in yards-per-play.

Our 6.00 ypp puts in at #26 in the country in yards-per-play.

Yards per play is also why the passing game is not at all close, as has been suggested. In conference play, OSU is passing the ball for 10.4 yards per attempt, easily leading the conference. Michigan rings up a paltry 6.6 yards per pass attempt.

Some might say that you can throw all of this out when discussing The Game; but in the Tressel Era, Michigan wins only when they are vastly superior on paper. (I have it on good authority that the game preview on this site will prove that)

This is the first time in the Tressel Era that OSU has been completely dominant over Michigan, statistically. Some say the stats don't matter in this game. To those people I offer a very simple mathematical formula:

Tressel + Carr + Dominant Buckeye Team = VICTORY for the Good Guys

I wonder which of these isn't telling the truth?

Just picture it. The Michigan team is standing just outside Ohio State stadium, for over an hour, the police with police dogs checking their bags, the fans cursing and spitting at them. Checking their bags with police dogs ... there's going to be a bomb in something? There's going to be drugs? It's ridiculous! It's a win at all cost attitude.

Saturday's surprise security check-in, which involved police and a bomb-sniffing dog, started after the Michigan team debarked its buses and walked toward the visitor's locker room at Ohio Stadium, about 90 minutes before kickoff.
Amazing how the team was out there for a full warmup despite not arriving at the lockerroom until within 30 minutes of the kickoff.
