Game Thread Game Nine: #1 tOSU 44, Minnesota 0 (10/28/06)

Didn't know exactly where to put this, thought this would be the best place.

RB Gary Russell, no longer on the team. Kicked out of the school. He was going to start this year. Looks like Minny won't have the rushing attack they've had the last couple years.
Academics knock Minnesota's Russell out of school

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota running back Gary Russell is not enrolled in classes for spring semester, making him ineligible for spring practices.

The school announced Russell's absence with a release Friday, but didn't specify the reason for or the length of Russell's departure. Team spokesman Shane Sandersfeld said he had no further information.

With leading rusher Laurence Maroney having declared for the NFL draft as a junior, Russell is expected to be the featured back for the Gophers next season.

Maroney and Russell each surpassed the 1,000 yards rushing last year, making Minnesota the first school in NCAA history to have two 1,000-yard rushers in three consecutive seasons.

"While this is disappointing for everyone involved, we want what is best for Gary and will help him in any way allowable," coach Glen Mason said in a prepared statement. "Gary has been a part of our family, and we will continue to support him."

Russell ran for 1,130 yards on 186 carries with 19 touchdowns as a sophomore last season.

I don't see anything in the article that says he was "kicked out" of school. It only says he's not enrolled for the spring quarter. By the way, the article is dated Feb 4th, and you're just now posting this? Is there any more current news on this?

COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
Another Gophers back suspended
Saturday, August 19, 2006

Minnesota running back Jay Thomas was suspended yesterday for the season opener against Kent State because of an unspecified violation of team rules, two days after coach Glen Mason suspended running back Brylee Callender indefinitely.
Thomas, a redshirt freshman, was expected to provide depth in an already thin Gophers backfield.
The Gophers lost junior Laurence Maroney shortly after last season when he declared for the NFL draft and was taken in the first round by New England. Then Gary Russell, the top returning rusher who set a school record for rushing touchdowns last season, was ruled academically ineligible.
Thomas’ suspension means that Alex Daniels, a sophomore who is currently making the transition from linebacker to running back, could be the No. 2 back behind starter Amir Pinnix, the only player with any real experience at the position.
Pinnix, a junior, rushed for 467 yards and one touchdown in 10 games last season as a backup.
