Game Thread Game One: #1 Ohio State 35, Northern Illinois 12 (9/2/06)

Gforce - I wasn't using the Miami game as some sort of reference point as to why OSU will blow out NIU, in fact, I don't know where you could have infered the same from my post in any way. In any case, I was just getting at what 21 was getting at... Fans claiming OSU has "never seen the likes" of this guy or that.. Trust me, OSU has seen the likes of them, and chances are high they practice against such a player every day of every week.

I'm sure Wolfe is a fine RB.... and I Don't consider NIU to be a "joke" of a game. But, remember this - OSU is better than #24 Maryland (2003).

Maryland was #13, Alabama was #24.

cocky you are.

You don't know just how good Garrett Wolfe is. And for you, a fan of a team who lost 7 or 8 starters to be so "confident", it isn't confidence it is arrogance.

Do I think NIU will win this game? No probably not. Do I think NIU will scare you Ohio State fans? Yes we will, we have done it to every BCS team we have played the last 4 years. It may be a half, it may be 4 quaters, but more then likely it will happen.

I see by your profile that you already have 20+ posts here and the one I quoted was only your second or third, but after reading that I didn't even bother to read your others.

First, we all know how good Garrett Wolfe is, and frankly we don't care. He can't beat us alone. We had the #1 rush and #5 overall defense in the entire country last year...no running back beat us.

Which brings us to point two. We lost nine starters, not "7 or 8". Still, the cliché, "We don't rebuild, we reload", applies. All of our "replacements" have significant playing time and many have started. Keep in mind that the only reason our three LBs didn't start last year was because they were behind arguably one the of best LB trios in college football history with three first-day NFL draft picks, including the #1 and #4 LBs taken. We have a DT (Quinn Pitcock) who will be at least first-team all Big Ten in not All American. Our secondary has been called faster than last year's group that had three more first-day NFL picks, including Donte Whitner (#8 overall pick in the draft). Many say we can't possibly lose that much talent without being significantly impacted, but we Buckeye fans know that it instead shows just how good our "backups" were. The majority of our backups from last season would've started at about 85-90% of other schools. The dropoff will be negligible.

Point three, we aren't one of those other "BCS teams" you've "put a scare into" over the last 4 years. You'll be lucky to be within 3 TDs at halftime. Our offense returns pretty much intact...we did lose WR Santonio Holmes, center Nick Mangold, and guard Rob Sims to the draft, with two of them being first-rounders, but we still have eight starters returning from an offense that averaged 485 yards and 38 points per game over the last half of the season. Oh yeah, we have these two guys named Troy Smith and Ted Ginn...maybe you've heard of them. I also assume you're counting your close game with Northwestern last year as one of those "putting a scare into a BCS team" games...the same Northwestern team we thoroughly destroyed 48-7. Your defense gave up 27+ points seven times last year...we should get that in the first half.

Now, let's give the man his due. He's right. Northern Illinois is a powerhouse.

According to Sagarin, they played the 97th toughest schedule and ended up 7-5 and ranked 60th in his power ratings.

Here's the NI schedule from Mike Greenfield's rankings...

In comparison, we were only 3rd in the power ratings and played only the second toughest schedule to go 10-2. Perhaps we should just surrender now? :slappy:
