Game Thread - USC 38, ASU 28 (Final)

Ok, so I guess that USC might be as good as LSU, since both of them needed late comebacks to win at ASU. That means if they played someone as good as Tennecheat, they would lose. But with the possible exception of ND, there's no one even remotely that good on their schedule.

By the way, ND is picking Purdue apart at West Lafayette. Near the end of the 1st quarter they are already up 7-0 and driving for more at PU's 20 yd line. Their defense is way better than ASU's. USC will have all they can handle when they go to South Bend.

sorry, but i must disagree that keller is a "great" nfl prospect. because i have seen only this game of his, i may be, and willing to accept that i'm, incorrect.

looking at keller's stats from the loss to lsu, i am probably incorrect. his numbers for that game are astounding. he passed for nearly 500 yards that game, and the longest pass was good for ONLY 44 yards. that's impressive.

i don't know. whatever. not to sound crass, but i don't really care. lol. i'm quite apathetic right now after seeing asu lose a game that they had in their hands.

ASU prety much put on a clinic (for the second time this season) of how to blow a big game. Terrible run defense, stupid turnovers, just a total meltdown, especially after they fought so hard to reclaim the lead late in the 4th quarter.

Texas should get some more first place votes this week.

Texas is getting my #1 vote (again - I switched last week).

I went to the bar to watch the second half. Great experience. First a guy sits down next to me and lights up a cigar. There were 4 folks cheering loudly for USC - there were 5 games on, and nobody else was cheering out loud for anybody. What the hell, this was suburban Chicago - must've either some bandwagon guys or they had bet real money.

Then the satellite goes out and I miss the last half of the 4th quarter. I was so glad I went to the bar to pay 4.50 per each Guinness. :(

I didn't read this whole thread, so sorry if it's been said, but did anyone else who watched the game think that the crowd was as quiet as any I've ever heard when their team was playing against #1? Maybe it was just the way the sound was being carried by the network, but it seemed like there was no noise...ever.

Couple things here.

For people people saying USC has the greatest O' ever that is bullshit. Put them up against a team that knows how to play d'.

Where the hell were the rowdies that were at gameday. Did they get too drunk to show up to the game. You had the number one team down and almost out.

And one last thing, Tresselball wins that game today. As much as some of you guys dislike it, he wins that game today.

Would Tresselball have been up 21-3 at halftime? Doesn't sound like the Tresselball I remember.

Possibly yes, but we haven't seen the offense click yet with Smith as quarterback. More than ever now, I'd like to see that game.

methomps, Arizona State entered this game ranked #82 on total defense and they pwned USC in the first half, especially on the line. Both teams were held 20 points below their scoring average.

It's the first game I have watched USC play and they looked anything but great on offense, certainly not "the greatest offense of all time".

Perhaps an indication of what might happen would be to look at the way the #7 ranked Alabama defense (Ohio State #10) dismantled Florida's offense. USC is better than Florida, but then, Florida barely scored at all.

In my opinion, Ohio State would have kept that offense looking exactly like it did with three minutes left in the 1st half and Tresselball would never have given USC the chance to pick up the three turnovers that changed the momentum. And Tressel would have been far better prepared with playcalling. ASU shot themselves in the foot early in the second half.

Texas or Ohio State would have beaten USC yesterday in my opinion.

USC is good, no doubt about that. They are explosive on offense. No doubt about that. The team I watched yesterday is not the best team in college football. No doubt about that.

Don't take this as a personal attack, because it's not, but people's opinions of who would beat who are often way off. Look at the pick'em contest last year. The overall winner was right 57.5% of the time over the season. That's a step above chance. Granted there is a spread involved, but I suspect 66% would win a straight up game picking only top 25 vs. top 25 matchups.

I think it is dangerous to draw solid conclusions from one or even two games. Last year, Oklahoma fans were convinced Peterson would gash USC for 250+ yards because they saw Notre Dame run successfully on SC. They thought they could pass on SC because they saw Cal complete 20+ straight passes and Oregon State throw for over 300 yards.

I'm a big fan of defense, but Alabama shutting down Florida doesn't say much about USC. Hey, I have bama's defense on my fantasy team, so I already had great respect for them. I didn't see the first half of the USC game, so I can't speak definitively about their performance, but they did have 220 yards in the 1st half, so they weren't completely shut down. Will the penalties and mental mistakes continue? Maybe, but then maybe not. I don't think Carroll will tolerate the penalties, so we'll see what he does about that.

A lot of teams seem to shoot themselves in the foot in the 2nd half against SC. A lot of it has to do with USC's halftime adjustments. I have yet to see someone who adjusts better than Carroll on a consistent basis.

With all due respect Methomps, because I really feel USC has a great team, I would love to see them play some teams with any kind of defense. They are going to win every shootout they are involved in. If someone shuts down their O, they are in trouble.
