Game thread: USC 66, UCLA 19 (Final)

You know for once I agree with ZachDumas...

Woody's "go for 3" comment is legendary in the minds of tOSU fans...

UCLA is their rival. They ran it up on their rival. Big deal.

I doubt any of us would lose respect for JT if he did it to scUM...hell, all season we had people begging JT to run it up.

Bobby Bowden (WVU) to Lou Holtz (William & Mary) after Holtz complained about Bowden running it up: "My job is to score points. Your job is to stop me."

nice try to shift the focus... to a game that didn't happen today, and a play that most probably didn't see (was it on national tv?)

Not much of a shift of focus considering you were comparing USC to Texas.

Do I think it was classy? No, of course not.

Do I think it was classless? No, that and 'overrated' are the most overused words on cfb message boards.

Frankly, it's the nicest thing Pete Carroll could've done for the Ruins fans. Now at least they can bitch and moan about that instead of contemplating how they can have an absolute dream season for them and still get pasted.

Is Carroll somehow less of a person because he pulls his starters out at 10 minutes instead of 15? That's a pretty arbitrary line. Believe what you want. But if that is the difference between class and classlessness, then class is pretty...overrated.

I'm of the mind there is no such thing as running it up. If a team doesn't want a lopside score, they better step up their D. If a team like USC wants to leave their starters in for a full 4Q, so be it. Don't like it? Stop em.

I'd watch every second of OSU beating down an inferior opponant. Every last play... and I'd jump for joy if OSU ever hit triple digits. Fuck the other team. Fuck them in their stupid defense-less asses.

If OSU ran up the score against UM I would probably enjoy it... tho I wouldn't try and defend it later on another board

it definitely was a shift, b/c you were asking for fairness, wondering why nobody complianed when VY threw for a late TD vs Baylor. Hard for me to care when I would have to follow the gametracker to realize it happened.

you're stating it was not a classy move. Therefore it's without class, so I call it classless. Not shaking JT's hand was a classless move on lllloyd's part. It's not as classless as temple's coach sending in a bruiser to hurt a player, but it's still classless b/c it's the opposite of class.

I have a lot of respect for Bush after his gameday interview (sure he coulda been saying the right things, but that's what I have to go on). He seems like a classy guy, even if he had previously somersaulted into the endzone (not including yesterday)... heck Holmes has his own dive move into the end zone in some games (besides the scUM one).

Why was he wearing a powder blue mouthpiece?

I was really pointing out how your opinion always seems to come out anti-USC. I'd put the same value on your opinion of something SC that I'd put on an ex-wife about her husband's character after a nasty divorce.

No, you're presenting a false dichotomy. Things don't have to be either classy or classless. There can be a range. If PC running White with 10 minutes left is classless, and a coach throwing into the endzone on the last play of the game up 50 is classless, then are they both equal in your book?

It's like sexy or not sexy. A woman can be sorta sexy, but not necessarily Bea Arthur sexy. Classless is the complete absence of class, and should be reserved (football-wise) for guys who taunt injured players.

Perhaps Karl Marx can settle the question of Pete's classlessness. Somehow I don't think PC could qualify as either a bolshevik or, for that matter, a menshevik.

I would characterize Pete's on-camera laughter during the latter stages of the slaughter as "minimally classful."

so was it sort of classy to go for it on 4th and 10? not really. I don't see anything positive, therefore it falls onto the spectrum of classless. I suggested the range thing as well. It doesn't have to be spitting at the other coach when shaking hands in order to be classless. Standing up after a reception and flicking off your rival's bench is also classless. There can be a range and both can still be classless.

if we're gonna get into details, THIS is what I called classless originally, and what sparked your responses. I even said that there was at least an excuse for lendale being in, but not for going for it on 4th and 10. Somehow that point was ignored (despite it being the sentence with the evil word).
Going for it on 4th and 10 on the 32 was absolutely classless. Keeping Lendale in to get a record is one thing, running up the score like that is poor sportsmanship at its finest.
edit: had I included a semicolon after thing, would it change the sentence? the running up the score was in reference to the 4th and 10.

you then threw up a gripe about tejas doing the same thing, which isn't classy either from a box score view. I didn't see the game, so I obviously have no ability to fairly comment on it, nor to "conveniently" ignore it.

If Vince struck the heisman pose, I would light him up for it. No doubt I have a bit of distaste towards USC, but if I saw Mack Brown laughing it up while destroying OU and going for it on 4th down and 10, I would call that classless as well.
