Gene Smith (AD The Ohio State, '10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

I've thought well of Gene Smith since he took over. He seemed to not lose any of the Andy Geiger momentum, and took tOSU athletic department to higher heights... but this Tressel stuff has been FUBAR'd beyond all belief. No control over information, seemingly no plan for this offseason process and now no plan for replacement after a forced resignation... so now no coach for a whole season... fucking great :smash:

He's a money guy and not a leader.

This is why I have zero confidence in him hiring a leader of a high-profile program.

Just going by track record of high-profile hires (going back throughout his career), I'd go with someone else to make the decision (or a committee).

A very wise businessman said to me the day after the first JT press conference that Smith was "gone". I didn't get it at first. He explained that as a leader of an organization you never go on record supporting someone without full knowledge of the facts. Smith never had all the facts, but he put his full support behind JT. (God I hope he didn't have the facts, if he did, it's even worse). Now that the situation has fully developed and JT has resigned, Smith has to go as well. I honestly don't see how a leader of any organization can oversee a shitshow like this and pretend like he is still the man. He is done, and he needs to resign yesterday.

This is just my assumption, but I think Smith did have all the facts, and was confident that he and his staff could do a good job of covering up/sweeping under the rug some of the stuff and spin everything into a positive light. I feel that Tress did take the info about the players to the AD, and Smith decided to try and handle things in-house but obviously the plan did not go accordingly.

I am not absolving Tress in this, he was apparently part of the problem in letting this stuff go/turned a blind eye under his watch which is not a good thing.

Overall, I think the only good course of action in this whole thing is for Smith to step down/get let go as well.

Just my IMO.

If Smith knew about the shenanigans and did nothing, he's a liar. Has to go.

If Smith knew nothing about the shenanigans, he's inept. Has to go.

I can see no justification for Gene Smith being the guy to hire Ohio State's next head football coach.
