Gene Smith (AD The Ohio State, '10 AD of the Year, '13 NAAC Organizational Leadership Award)

This. Gene isn't the only one who has been an utter dumb ass during this whole investigation. Gee has been an intricate clog in the year long wheel of stupidity coming from the administration.

Firing Gordon Gee for this would be incredibly stupid for the University. Gee's fundraising ability is extraordinary, and he continues to lead tOSU to new heights academically.

Nothing about this situation has been handled well, and part of that responsibility falls on Gee. But firing him over this would be moronic. Fire Gene Smith, bring in an AD who is going to be able to handle situations like this well, and stop talking about football, that's why you employ an AD.

Also, Gee has fully supported Tressel shortly before he fired him as well. I don't think he could really say anything else in that situation. Also, saying Gene Smith's job is safe implies that Gene won't be fired, not that he may not resign in the very near future...

Take Gee's comments with a grain of salt. What is he supposed to say in off the cuff remarks to reporters at a basketball game? "Smith'll be out by Friday." Remember that Gee publicly supported Tressel when the writing on the wall was quite apparent that his days were numbered.

Gee will talk with Wexner and probably a few other key board members and decide GS's fate over the Holidays. I seriously wouldn't look for anything to happen before January.
I take some comfort in the bolded parts.

There's a big difference between looking back at a post as saying 'we were warned' and a confirmation bias.

Very true. More than a fair point, and I absolutely agree. Given the context of the previous discussion (or whatever it was) I thought (IMHO) that the use of confirmation bias was apropos due to the comments/statements going beyond "we were warned" statements based on some of the language used in the post(s).

Well now... here's a different and less ambiguous version of what Gee had to say:

Just talked to Gordon Gee, who said that Gene Smith's job is safe. Gee said the decision to not appeal was his.

I think we have all heard statements like this before. The dreaded vote of confidence. Just wait until a full week of crazy fans emailing Dr. Gee, Gene, and the Trustees. Then the Board of Trustees will have their say. I don't think Gene will make it through this one. It's a tough subject for me because I know the type of caliber individual Gene is as well as the work he does for the non-athlete OSU student community. I'm just not seeing how the extremely negative public opinion coupled with actual admitted mistakes doesn't get him into serious trouble with university decision makers. I don't think anything will be decided until after the bowl game.

agree with all of this...usually most people do not get fired before the holidays...then again most people do not make million of dollars a year...really dont care when he gets fired as long as its soon

Gee of course shouldn't be fired for being an embarrassment to the athletic aspect of the university......got a little emotional when I agreed with the poster above me. However, I would hope the BoT would tell him to shut the hell up concerning athletic matters in the future. He has made countless quotes over the past year that have created bad PR for the university, and just doesn't need to be involved other than cheering in any aspect of the athletic department.......he's proven to be quite inept in that regard.

Friday, December 23....Doug Archie fired
Friday, December 30.....Smith fired
2011 is then behind us....

I'll go to my grave thinking this. I think Gene Smith took either the movie "2012" or the actual Mayan Prophecy literally (therefore could care less about 2012 and football).

A fresh perspective leading OSU through the violations and sanction hearings would have been nice.

Can't wait until Gene is no longer a "Buckeye."
But, but...Gene-o's experience with the infractions committee was supposed to help us! Well, in the end, it meant precisely bupkis. In fact, the arrogance derived from his percieved knowledge on said committee's operations probably had a negative effect on the damn thing. Be gone.

NOTE TO THOSE POSTING IN THIS THREAD TONIGHT.

I've been lenient in this thread today. Most of us are pissed off, and upset with the AD.

It's OK to express that by saying things like: "he's shown bad judgment", "he's made terrible mistakes", "I think he should be fired", etc.

It is NOT OK to call the AD and/or the President names while ranting about these issues. I've deleted and edited several posts today because they've done that. But I'm not going to continue doing that - that type of thing will result in warnings or infractions.

So it's probably not a good idea to mix drinking with posting in this thread.

He has now made us look stupid 3 times in one year. Great job. There is no way an AD who presides over an athletic department who is tagged with failure to monitor should keep his job. That would be like a security guard falling asleep on his graveyard shift and allowing the joint to get wiped out.
