New NCAA rule a loss for coaches, recruits -- OrlandoSentinel.com

The best coaches will say recruiting is all about relationships. And how better to develop a relationship, they'll say next, then to spend time around a prospect and speak with those closest to him or her?

Yet the NCAA seems intent on stripping away the opportunities for head football coaches to develop such relationships with high school players. The association's latest strike against coaches took effect this week, with college head coaches no longer able to recruit off campus from April 15 until May 31.

The rule revolves around the SEC -- league representatives proposed it, and many around the country feel it targets the conference's most zealous recruiters. In some circles, the legislation has acquired a catchy nickname -- "The Saban Rule." And its namesake isn't real pleased about losing his time on the road. . . .

College football coaches wish springtime were solely for player development and booster-club speeches. But often the multi-million-dollar men find themselves making fools of themselves in defense of themselves or their players. Here's a look a four of the most dysfunctional coaches for Spring '08:

*Rich Rodriguez, Michigan: This season's undisputed champ for zaniness, Rodriguez has spent three months embroiled in a lawsuit against West Virginia, his former employer. Now an affidavit has revealed that Rodriguez offered a job to a WVU fundraiser accused of making a racist remark regarding offensive coordinator Calvin Magee, a black man. Lots more to come on this story.

*Nick Saban, Alabama: Numbers show the King of the Crimson has distributed 91 scholarships for the fall, six more than the NCAA maximum. But Saban refused to discuss how he plans to get under the minimum, telling the media, "It's none of your business. And don't give me this stuff about the fans need to know, because they don't."

*Rick Neuheisel, UCLA: Bruins football tradition dictates that the players, led by the senior class, skip one of the 15 spring practices. Neuheisel, a former UCLA player, participated when he was an undergrad. Now as head coach, he balked at the practice and plans to petition the NCAA to get the missed practice back. As if Pete Carroll and the Trojans didn't pose enough problems for Year I of the Neuheisel Era.

*Bo Pelini, Nebraska: The Daily Nebraskan on campus in Lincoln wrote an editorial criticizing Pelini's discipline of recently arrested Huskers. Pelini responded by calling the newspaper's offices and dressing down a student staff member for the paper's stance. The tirade came a week after the coach was spotted ducking in and out of downtown bars looking for players enjoying an adult beverage.

I brought up this guy a while back in this forum. I personally like him, however i know it's a long shot he even gets a look from TOSU. Until now he had no offers on his table. He landed his first offer from Penn State today, and Tennesee is suppost to be close to offering along with Illinois. Grew up a Penn State fan and they are seen as the front runner.:oh::io:

That was my pointe when i brought up morris a while back in this thread. His recovery speed is second to none and i played high school football and it's damn hard to cover guys one on one. Especially at a combine event like the rivals event he was at. There were a ton of great athletes. I would love to see him get a long look from the staff. He's a very interesting prospect, but a little undersized in height but not in weight. Could be a under the radar offer that the buckeyes seem to offer every year. Ala zach domincone, travis howard, chimdi checkwa etc. And we have been recruiting the maryland/D.C area alot harder recently. Maybe Flash Thomas can let tressel know about this kid. Probably doesn't get offer unless he comes to camp either way I love this prospect.:oh::io:

Just got a offer from Penn St. and Louisville. Next up will be Tenn. Also, will be taking a visit to Knoxville with in the month......

Recruits with questions find answers at Ohio State

Penn State's Joe Paterno has shown no signs of being ready to retire after turning 81 in December, and Ohio State football fans probably are hoping the coaching icon sticks around until he's 102.
The Nittany Lions have been limping along the last few years, and the program probably will remain a shell of what it once was as long as Paterno refuses to turn in his whistle.
Ohio State coach Jim Tressel doesn't seem like a guy who engages in negative recruiting, but top prospects in Pennsylvania have come to view Penn State as an unstable situation given Paterno's year-to-year status, and Tressel is taking full advantage of it.

With tOSU's 13th commit today and May still a couple days away, it got me wondering: are recruits committing earlier this year nationwide? Is this a trend we will see progress further into the future? On a side note, wouldn't this help show the prospects' collective desire for an early signing period like in basketball?

I was thinking what some other thought of this. I am excited about the players who we have verbal commitments from, but how early do we want all these guys? I know on the surface this sounds crazy but I would think as a coach you would like to see how these kids do during their Sr. season and/or at camp.

I know kids are getting far more exposure early then what they use to, but I still would think the coaches would want to see some Sr. film. Possibly in this day and age you can't wait that long to extend an offer but I guess I am old school and would like to sit on about 10+ offers until after camp and these kids Sr. campaigns.

I know what you're saying and don't disagree (in fact I've sort of been thinking the same thing myself), but also keep in mind that some schools (perhaps most notably Texas) have been recruiting like this for quite a while AND competing for conference titles and even national championships at the same time, so I doubt we need be too concerned. I think we've always offered kids the staff was sure about early on, it's just that we've never had so much luck getting them to sign up right away. This is probably why a Chris Freeman doesn't have an offer yet. Despite all the talent, the staff just can't be sure because of his limited playing time; conversely, most if not all of the guys offered at this early stage are, in the coach's opinions, as close to sure things as possible in the recruiting game.

I always felt the same way. The longer you look at these kids the less chance of making a mistake. However, the process is accelerating across the board. How many times do schools lose a kid because one school didn't show them enough love early in the process. (Look at what almost happened with Fellows.)

I think what has really changed is that there are so many services looking at these kids that there are no secrets. An Illinois or MSU can take its shots at some Ohio kids and know they are pretty safe.

I am sure JT would prefer to make all his offers in January - but the competition wont allow it.

It seems like the coaches are really emphasizing strength in this class and I like it. I thought we looked physically weak last year. We had great sideline-to-sideline speed but we got pushed around, even against Kent St.

Whiting, Simon, Mewhort, Linsley, Homan, Klein, Fellows, Bell, and even Wood are all really strong kids and while I don't know how much Barnett, Givens, Fields, or Hall lift I do know they make up for it by playing physically.

Quick follow up on how early we are getting commits from some of these kids. There have always been Ohio boys who will jump as quickly as the offer comes. But prior to last year when we landed Brewster and Shugarts after the Spring game, the earliest OOS commit in the Scout Database is May 27th - so that is at least five years.

We are sitting on 4 OOS and May hasn't started. We are more than a month away from the camps that used to signal the start of serious recruiting.
