Google + (hoopla over real names)

I just got an invite from CentralMo last night. Haven't had much time to use it.

I really like the idea of fantasy football drafts with it.

We can eventually merge this with the google services thread in the Tech forum, but we'll leave it here for now.

I like the idea of having serious competition for Facebook. I view FB as a necessary evil, one that has at least as much detriment as benefit. I use it to keep in contact with family across the country, but all the extraneous BS that goes along with it, along with the privacy you give up to use half of it, makes it almost unusable. Serious competition will (hopefully) make FB more customer oriented.

It's pretty slick. Clean interface, functionally robust but simple to get the hang of the basics.

I actually used the Hangout feature to have a little video conference yesterday with a business associate.

It's looking like the best of Skype, Facebook and Twitter all rolled into one - but without all the annoying shit of Facebook (Farmville, Mafia Wars, incessant crap), the 140 character limitation of Twitter and the one-person-chat at a time deal with Skype.

I don't know that it'll be a great corporate business tool, but for a small business like me, who uses lots of Google stuff already, it looks like a winner.

If your looking for an invite PM me your email address. When they open up I'll be able to send out invites to whoever pms me.

I definitely like the clean interface, reminds me of the old facebook. I've got my gmail set up for the "new" theme so it has the same look/feel as google+. Hardly any of my friends but a bunch of people from school in the CS department are online. So I haven't got to fully check out the service, but it does look promising.

Give it time, you'll be saying the same thing about Google+.

iPad access is still a bit underbaked. It automatically redirects to the mobile web app (which I hate no matter which site is doing it). I have been able to use the rich site thru the iChromy browser since it supports user agent spoofing. Even through the alternative browser I wasn't able to do some small simple things, such as commenting on something in my stream when pointing to a text entry field failed to bring up the virtual keyboard.

Question for the established users: Does adding a non G+ user to a circle (from my Gmail contacts, for instance) automatically send that person an email, or is it only if I share something with that circle? The last thing I want to do while checking things out is spam half of my family and friends.
