For each group, the last two games are played simultaneously, so opponents can't conspire to a mutually beneficial result by knowing the outcome of the other game.

Two teams from each group advance. A team gets 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw. The first tiebreaker is goal-differential, the next is goals scored.

Team.........Pts..Goal-Diff..Goals-Scored
Slovenia......4......+1..........3
USA...........2.......0..........3
England.......2.......0..........1
Algeria.......1......-1..........0

The USA plays Algeria in Pretoria on ESPN and England plays Slovenia at the same time on ESPN2.

Slovenia needs a win or a tie with England to advance, or a tie between USA-Algeria. Or to lose by 1 to England if the USA loses 0-1 or 1-2.

The USA advance with a win. If they lose, they're out. If they tie, they need England to lose, or to have England tie Slovenia without scoring 2 more goals than the USA scores against Algeria.

England advances with a win. If they tie Slovenia, England only advances if the USA ties Algeria but England scores at least 2 more goals than the USA on Wednesday.

The winner of this group will advance to play the 2nd place team in Group D. The runner-up of Group C will advance to play the winner of Group D (which has Germany-Ghana-Serbia-Australia).

USA! USA! USA!

On a completely off-topic note: too dang bad the NFL can't institute some version of this excellent rule in order to eliminate teams sitting out their real team at the end of the season. This is a great rule.

Bornstein? Game. Over. :p

I'd rather Buddle start and Gomez sub, but small quip and I figure it's more about pairing two different types of strikers (Buddle and Altidore are big, back-to-goal type guys, Gomez can make runs at the D and work off Jozy).

Not bad really, maybe keep Boca out at left and give Goodson a shot in the middle, but that's inexperienced. I would have also liked Spector to get a shot...maybe. He's great on the right, but been bad on the left. Pretty much left back has been and still remains an issue for the US. They don't have options.

Here's to Bornstein having a big day. I think he can. He's quick and can handle the Algerian's speed, he just needs to not lose his head/man.

In previous games, that Algerian header would've found its way into the net. Today, we get a friendly cross bar. Good sign?

(Trying to put a positive spin on almost allowing the first Algerian goal since the 8th grade picnic)

Yeah, good start for Lady Luck and the US today.

Just settle down now and take the game to them. We survived the first 15 minutes.
