Are they bringing John 117 back or is he still "retired"?

The entire story line will focus on John 117 and Cortana. It will pick back up from where we left them in space. John is awakened by cortana as what remains of their ship is being boarded by a violent force of Elites and Grunts. A few years have passed while he was in cyro-sleep.

Basically what EasternBuck said, I think 4 or 5 years will have passed. Also, Halo 4 is the start of a new trilogy. And it's said to be much darker than the first 3. The main enemy won't be Covenant forces either, hasn't been said what it is, just that a new enemy poses a new threat

Not that anyone will really want an answer this detailed but here goes.

***This is just pure speculation on my point but is based off the books and where that was pointing me***

But.... This is what I think is happening at the start. When Cortana is screaming "Wake up John..." and the Elites and Grunts are boarding his ship I think this is a offshoot of the real covenant that views humanity as a threat that must be dealt with before it can regroup from the war that just ended.
But this small conflict will be quickly be overshadowed by the discovery of a darker and far more deadly threat to the universe that will be found on the construct we see John looking out at in the teaser trailer. Some think this threat could be living Forerunners or a great and ancient species of intelligent beings who technological accomplishments are the only ones thought to be of greater ability and scope than the Forerunners.

Some background of Halo stroyline from before modern human history- from books:

These ancient rulers of the universe are called Precursors. When you read the books you learn that it was likely that Forerunners and Precursors coexisted until a point in Forerunner history where they rose against the Precursors and started a long and violent war that resulted in the near if not total destruction of all Precursors. Some feel that in a last form of punishment the Precursors created and released a biologic weapon aimed at consuming the now growing Forerunner empire and anything else that would get in the way. -The Flood.
The Flood was relentless and could use the combined intelligence against its enemies by the formation of graveminds. This caused forerunners technology to be a downfall when fighting the flood. They seem to struggle with the flood to one degree or another clear up until the rise of the human empire.
You learn that after humans reach a point where they are capable of space travel they begin to infringe on forerunner controlled areas this leads to another war that humans nearly win and would have if not for humanity fighting on two fronts. One against the forerunners and one against the flood. We beat the flood but lose against the forerunners. They are unable to attain how we defeated the flood and pushed the flood to deep space, and so, out of fear, force the now defeated humanity into de-evolution on their home planet of Earth. Where ewe stay until more "modern" times.

Back to John 117 time frame:
I'm guessing that when we meet the forerunners hidden away by this construct they will have to decide if we are the rebirth of this old human threat or if we are now somehow different and a help to the safety of the universe. So, will they be friendly or violent towards us. Also how or when will the precursors play into this. And is the Primordial a precursor or a creation of theirs meant to trigger the spread of the flood. But although I think the flood will be discussed I do not think we will be fighting the Flood directly in Halo 4.

apparently it's supposed to be an even more dangerous enemy than the flood

It didn't end up being the case, but I was really really hoping the mystery planet was Onyx, and that MC would end up finding Blue team that is trapped in there (from the book Ghost of Onyx). I thought that would have been bad ass to team up with MC's old team half way through the game or something

I think it, the construct that is, will be a planet "Shield World" just like Onyx or one of the two Arks. It being an Ark makes sense as the Ark's were active right up until the end and would be believable to find forerunners there. But Onyx was my favorite book as well.

It is, the planet is called Requiem, and it was confirmed it's a shield world

I've always thought about reading the Halo books, but was too busy reading the Warcraft and Starcraft books instead, which are very good if you are into those games.

I cannot wait for this game though. It will awesome to have a new series of Halo games with bigger and badder enemies.
