HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

I want him to be the right guy, but it's not a "toxic spiral" to ask questions based on the evidence we've seen. He put us in a bad spot at the end of the game by not taking the easy field goal early in the first quarter. We were down by four at the end and had to have a touchdown and the only way to get that was with an epic 85 seconds to end the game. They did it and it was epic, but how many times does that happen? Twenty percent, thirty? A last second TD against ND only proves that they scored a last second TD against ND. The biggest problem is the bind that Day put them in. They should've been down 14-13 and, while possibly still scoring a TD, they wouldn't have HAD to. An easy FG and a two point win is far less dramatic, but, imho, a better win in that particular game.

No argument here. Surprisingly, there's a middle ground that I wish he would find. It includes passing plays on 3rd or 4th and short.......like that one we run about 15 times a game where we roll the QB out to the right and throw to the TE for a gain of 2 yards at most.

He’s the right guy going into 12 team playoffs starting next year. I think with his recruiting and QB development, it’s a near lock we are in playoffs very consistently.

And I know it comes off as sour grapes, but let’s see what Michigan looks like coming out of the Covid transfer portal situation. Florida State literally has a 1 year window to compete for a title (this season) and they are fucked bc of all the roster turnover. They can still use the portal, but it won’t be littered with 5th and 6th year seniors with extra years of eligibility due to Covid. Michigan has been heavy with this same tactic…I think we will see a noticeable drop-off in performance when they are more reliant on their recruiting success.

Agreed 100 percent, that's gonna make a difference, and it's coming soon. I think what annoys me the most about a lot of this discussion is how much people gloss over how many times Urbs and Tress essentially wasted opportunities for championships and playoff appearances by way of coaching. Whether it was through bad hiring or poor game management they both had plenty of stains (see Texas 05, USC 09, Penn State 08, MSU 13 & 15, and the Iowa/Purdue debacles). Still amazing coaches who did unspeakably great things for the program.

Their success against scUM is obviously going to carry the day but again, Tress and Urbs had the luxury of only playing maybe one or two legitimately good Michigan teams. Day has had to deal with the two best Michigan teams we've seen since fucking Clinton, it's not an excuse, but context does matter.

I'm not saying Day's the guy for sure, I think the rest of this season will really determine his standing in the long term. He's not perfect but he's certainly done enough to warrant a wait and see approach as opposed to the pitchforks people were breaking out on Saturday night.

Because it's not just asking questions. It's beating a top 10 team in the exact fashion people wanted to see OSU win (punching the ball in the endzone at the most critical moment) and people immediately saying he's not the guy, I'm off the Day wagon, now he's too animated and it's weird.

Nothing is going to change until he beats Michigan and wins an NC because that's the job. But it's insane to watch that game, see the ending, and in that moment be thinking "Wow, he still hasn't beaten Michigan and won an NC".

Exactly. I think what it is, to me, is that people are already at their conclusion of "Day ain't the guy" and aren't really engaging in a conversation anymore. The fact is, this was a top-10 win on the road with a new QB and new OL and folks are just focused on everything else.

The pragmatics are: Ohio State cannot and will not always beat Michigan, or Georgia, or Clemson, or Alabama. Those teams are too good to expect to win them all (although I think Michigan will begin to drop quite a bit after the 5th/6th year COVID-eligible players move on). And, eventually, we will lose to Penn State or Notre Dame (you know, the other Top 10 programs of all-time) let alone the Wisconsin's or Iowa's on occasion. Every era of Ohio State (or any program, ever) has had those losses - not just the Cooper or Day eras.

Day has already beaten Michigan and would have beaten them again in '20 but didn't get the chance. Yes, '21 and '22 were awful. And yes, Day is far from perfect (the team's toughness should be in question). And yes, I think '19 Clemson and '22 Georgia will hurt for a while longer. But this is a damn good program that stands to be damn good in perpetuity - and the playoffs are expanding and the Big Ten is changing. I'm not sure what more folks can realistically expect from a college football team. A lot of folks just seem in a panic to avoid 'Cooper 2.0'. Sheesh, I don't even feel like I'm defending him here - its just I think some folks are just impatient as all hell given the '23 Buckeyes context. Can we wait to see just a bit here?

No active college football coach has a better record against ranked opponents than Ryan Day.

With Saturday’s 17-14 win over Notre Dame, Day is now 17-6 against ranked opponents as a head coach. That's a winning percentage of 73.9 percent, the best among all active college football coaches who have faced a minimum of 10 ranked opponents in their respective careers.

Yeah, but those 2 losses to scUM the last 2 years still sticks in one's craw......:mad2:
