HC Ryan Day (2019 B1G Media COY)

This off-season is going to be long and miserable here.

Nah. Big Game will come up short in a Bowl game and everyone will spend the whole off season celebrating the moral victory and rationalizing everything so the "Day is elite...because who else you gonna get?" narrative will be going strong by next fall. Then when he starts knocking off tomato cans it will be the annual "See I told you that you are a bad fan" moralizing.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

While I think there are some killer instinct issues with Day. I also think his offensive philosophy is flawed for college football. He has good passing concepts but the run concepts just aren't up to par. His offense might actually be more fit for the NFL than college.

I think in college you need to be able to lean on your run game at any moment. QB passing play can be up and down. I think you handicap yourself by not having QB run concepts and a strong running game in general. The sparring use of Xavier Johnson is almost criminal for how much of big play potential he has shown in the running game. He would have been a hybrid in Urban Meyers offense and a big part of the offense.

For everybody saying Day isn’t the answer, who is then? Outside of Smart and Saban, who would be able to do better?
Well, you don’t know, that’s the thing. Everyone thought JT was going to be in over his head and he murdered them all but once. People thought hayseed was the answer and he spent a decade being their bitch. There are no guarantees. I just remember Keels on the radio saying how much he was glad they didn’t hire Mike Belotti at the time because he was a good coach but he didn’t “get the rivalry”. Now I realize that’s an old school way of thinking in this era, but…here we are. I think Day gets the rivalry…but can he win it when Michigan is good? Different question.
