Help fix my laptop please...

BuckeyeFlorida

Resident Science Dork
So I tried to hook up a 27" Apple Cinema HD monitor to my Compaq Presario v6310us laptop yesterday and it blue-screened my laptop. I've removed the HD and mounted it in an external enclosure, and the drive itself is fine. Here is the error I get when the HD is in the affected laptop following a boot attempt.

Is there a way to repair the issue while the drive is mounted as an external without having to reformat?

Thanks! BFlorida

:oh:

Can't see the pic - Flickr says it's private.

If it just bluescreened your laptop, that's normally a recoverable error.
What's it doing when attempting to boot up?
What OS/HDD/CPU/RAM?

Thanks for the response - fixed the security setting so you should now be able to see the photo on flickr.

Boots to the "boot menu" for launch windows normally or try to repair. If you try to repair, it just runs and runs and can't make any repairs. If you try to boot into Safe Mode it will boot through but then you get the errors shown in the Flickr above.

Windows Vista/110 GB/CPU - not sure AMD something or another/2 GB RAM

Q: You have the ability to mount it externally to another Vista PC and run a FULL scandisk/chkdsk on it?
the "I/O error" is the one that seems troubling...

Do a non-fixing full scan, ie, do NOT check "on" to fix errors...
Don't wanna write anything just yet...

Google search it without the exact addresses...

"the instruction at" "referenced memory at" "the required data was not placed into memory because of an i/o error"

Quick look shows someone saying to repair/reinstall Vista, but you'll want to read more first.

Edit: Whoops, just saw that you can't repair.

Reason I suggested a scan, is because I was having similar problems - turned out to be bad sectors on the HDD.
Couldn't install Vista SP's (some DD's were living in the bad sectors) So I was screwed.
Had to buy another HDD, but was able to copy off about 100GB worth of pictures and video (I shoot in adobe RAW, so each pic is like 30MB)

Not too long after, the entire drive crapped out.

Yup, saw several references to having to replace the hard drive, though not always.

Here's the simultaneously most/least helpful comment I found...

This is usually caused by a program getting its knickers in a twist.
The (NT based) OS allocates memory to processes in a clever and organised way.
In the usual run of things, a program will only try to access memory that has been assigned to it. Unfortunately, every now and again (software is buggy or is running in a situation it was never designed to cope with) a program will try to access memory (or even code sometimes) which is beyond its assigned boundaries. This will cause a 'Protection Exception (Int 13)' and the error message you've seen will come up.
The causes of this are so varied that it is practically impossible even to hazard an intelligent guess at what's causing it.

Thanks both of you for your input... I tried to right-click on the drive and run the disk check, but was unable to complete it. As best as I can tell, it seems to be a registry issue. Either way it seems like the files will be able to be saved, by the OS might need a fresh install.

Either way I have already been thinking about replacing it, anyone have any suggestions?

I swore off SeaCrate years ago...

Leaving basically Hitachi and Western Digital.
I just recently got a Hitachi 7200RPM 500GB HDD for $69 at CompUSA..
Probably less at NewEgg, but I needed it FAST!

IF Western Digital, go for a Scorpio Black, which is a 7200RPM SATA.
Come in 250/320/500GB sizes, maybe 750GB..

Um, your lappie, is sata, right?

For desktops a Samsung F3 Spinpoint is pretty strong, but I admittedly don't know much about laptops.

Seagate has been getting a horrible reputation. I have always bought WD, and so far I have had no issues (knock on wood). They normally cost a little more, but reliability in data storage is pretty important.

Are you able to boot into Safe mode?

(Important, this will lead to further instruction based on the answer)

I believe the laptop is SATA. When I tried to access the files today via external enclosure, 99.9 of my personal information was in tact, although the HD intermittently makes loud clicks.

I bought a MacBook Pro to replace it on an interim basis, but I do need to get this machine back up and running.

Booting to Safe Mode seems to work initially, but it ultimately results in the error message shown in Post #1. I haven't been able to get it any further.
