Hi Speed Connect Issue

redskinbucksfan

The brownest of the brown liquors
Mrs. Skin had a DSL line put into our house for her work, but there are connection problems when switching the modem line connection from her laptop to our home desktop. Sometimes if you unplug the line altogether (power included) for like 30 minutes and then try to switch, it will work. But most of the time the home desktop can't detect a high speed connection when I try to use it. Plus, I am completely computer retarded. Any suggestions?

Ok lemme see if I got this straight....

When you plug into the laptop, it works fine, always, no problems?

Then when you plug it into the desktop, it sometimes works and sometimes doesnt?

How bout if you do that, and have problems, then you plug it back into the laptop again.......does it pick right back up and work fine?

Because see your computer has to obtain a couple things from your dsl modem, and just switching the ethernet or usb from one computer to another can definitely cause a bit of a hiccup.

Does the laptop have wireless?

I would recommend getting yourself a little 4 port network switch, so you can plug both of them in at the same time.

Typically, if I can't use it on the desktop, I can plug it back into the laptop and it will work fine. The laptop does have wireless, but it is for work only. My interest in using the DSL is a little more "adult", so that's why it's confined to being used on the desktop.

If by "adult", you mean porn..........then that would probably explain the problems you are having with your desktop :p

So you have to physically power the dsl modem off and back on, for it to be used on the desktop?

It sounds to me like the desktop is having trouble pulling an IP address or something. Most likely a network issue on the computer itself. You may wanna first try running some anti-spyware programs on it, like spybot, or spysweeper. Then maybe run the ol' winsock fix on it. Which you can find by doing a google search for "windows xp winsock fix". Download that and run it, kinda cleans out your network settings and such.
