Fuck that. I can't wait to beat the snot out of those skunkbears from TSUN. It's all I think about.

I'm taking a break Sepia...I hope by the seasons start I have the hunger back...the incident in December and now this has brought me down.

Hey maybe a NC in Basketball can bring my spirits back up:biggrin:

I'm torn...

As an alum, I am extremely disappointed and [censored]ed. This is a huge miss and it is inexcusable. I expect the University, the Atheletic Dept and the Head Coach to operate at the highest standard. This business of "body of work" and "compared to other schools" sound like excuses to me - no matter how clean my slate is as an individual, there are some principles and standards that *must* be inviolable. This issue, in my opinion, is one of those... It's a harsh stance, perhaps too harsh, but as an alum, that's where my head goes.

The line is clear and it was crossed. Period. I'm happy that the issue was self-reported, but I'm not sure it makes me feel any better about the fact that a line was clearly crossed by the University's Head Football Coach and immediate internal action was apparently not taken to redress the clear violations. There are ways to deal with the violations without jeopardizing a federal investigation or putting student-atheletes in harm's way.

As a fan, I say "hang tough" JT... sock it to 'em. Don't let 'em see you sweat.

There's a middle-ground in there somewhere.

T The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am in Coach Tressel and the more peeved I am with the players who put him in this position.

The second part is where I see this saga focusing next. JT effed up, he was put in a tough spot and temptation got the better of him. That part is slowly sinking in for us as a whole I think.

If I can continue the amateur psychology hour theme (which was done quite well imo) I think the next phase will be Buckeye Nation looking at the players that put him in this spot like the lying teenage kids you illustrated above. As with normal teenagers the stuff they do makes you double angry because its so selfish and such a slap in the face.

Society says you can't kill 'em but if you are the parent of one you know the thought crosses your mind. When the blood stops boiling you remember they are still kids no matter how big they look and kids make mistakes. However, it doesn't change the fury at first. As my mother told me I'll always love you but I don't like you very much right now. :!

Bottom line to me; Just like JT, the players at the heart of this mess need to catch their fair share of hell and then be forgiven. Any college athlete knows you can't go do the shit they were doing. It was stupid, selfish, short sighted and them thinking you are too stupid to catch it makes the act doubly insulting but that's what teenagers effing do. Its what we did to our parents when we were teenagers (sorry Mom and Dad) its what their kids will do to their asses some day.

I agree with everything in this post...except apologizing to my parents. They were assholes and had that shit coming. Fuck you mom and dad.

JT is a fine coach and teacher. I also believe he is a very good man. He is not a good administrator IMHO. I believe JT is a conflict avoider. Sometimes you have to deal with the dirty hairy snot boogers that cross your desk head on. This is the job of the CEO who handles the OSU Football brand. To ignore these and hope things go away is what got him into this mess. He will grow from this and learn i am sure.

the melodramatic reaction of "this ruins EVERYTHING for me!" is obnoxious as hell, sports is supposed to be our escape from girly shit and drama... if I want to hear about how people aren't excited about football season I will go crash a girls night

Tressel made a mistake, Tressel will deal with the consequences of his mistake like a man, the Ohio State football team will continue to work hard and prepare for the football season like men, hell, if anything this will motivate them- us against the world and all of that

it seems like fans are taking Tressel's adversity to make a show of how upset they are, look at me! look at how upset I am! nothing will ever be the same for me!

by all means, discuss the punishment, discuss whether it was fair, discuss Tressel's reputation and how it has been tarnished, discuss ANYTHING, we are adults and we can have adult conversations with one another about serious topics

but please, let's leave the dramatics at the door

like I said, I don't follow Ohio State football to deal with dramatic shit, I got engaged to do that

sorry brutus2002, I don't mean this to be unfairly directed at you, you aren't the only one or even the worst example, you were just unlucky enough to trigger my reaction

There's a balanced / moderate middle-ground in there somewhere.

I'm feeling similar, but I'm not feeling conflicted. After my initial support of unequivocal support last night, I read the emails and then took some time to sleep on it. After that, I would have to say I'm firmly in both camps.

I don't think "not all in" is appropriate for describing my view, but I now share the same disillusionment that many others in this thread have expressed. It's becoming more and more clear that dating back to the original presser in December, while the Buckeyes have reported their violations under the rules, they have been hesitant to own up to them. There have been excuses at every turn - from the economy, to compliance training failure, to a need to protect player safety or preserve confidentiality. It's time for the excuses to stop. They are not lies, but they are a form of dishonesty in my view. I think it's time for everybody involved to be more forthright about what happened, take their lumps from this without complaint and move on.

On the other hand, I'm reminded of the things that were said to me by my mother when I made mistakes as a youngster. She didn't care what the other kids were doing or were allowed to get away with. I was told that I knew better, and that she expected me to act like it. She also told me when I got in trouble that she loved me, but she didn't really like me at that moment. That's exactly how I feel about Coach Tressel and Gene Smith right now. I feel that I can feel extreme disappointment and be frank about what has happened - and still be 100% in support.

On the bright side, we may finally get a real OC. :)

Is it bad that the first thing I thought of when I heard about JT's suspension was that it would be interesting to see someone else call the plays? Has there been any mention over who will fill the role of HC for the first two games? Could be a chance for Luke Fickell to throw his hat in the ring for JT's replacement.

I had to google that, and if you mean I am transferring my feelings and frustrations about dealing with pissed off girls onto the board, then yes, that is very much the reaction I was having

edit: and fuck you for making this about me, you bastard

If the story played out the way OSU says, them count me as "not all in." There was nothing in the first email that indicated a need for confidentiality, and nothing that screamed "don't say a word or your players may be in grave danger." The first email also made it clear that the target's house was raided, so passing along the info would not have tipped off an unknowing subject of a federal investigation. When JT replies "I will get on it ASAP," what exactly did he do? From what OSU says, he didn't contact anyone else in OSU administration. Did he go to the players? Did he contact a personal attorney for advice?

If JT is falling on the sword to protect the program or university as a whole, then obviously I have a different opinion. And I wouldn't be totally surprised if that's closer to the truth.

When I look at the e-mails once again I do feel that JT is protecting someone and that is the attorney referenced in the e-mail who is undoubtedly a friend of his. It is obvious that this attorney was consulted or retained by Eddie Rife and he illegally disclosed information to Tressel.

This scenario makes a little more sense to me, however it does not make the whole situation any better.

He put himself and his players above the University. TP and Jim Tressel are not greater than OSU. IMO Tressels ego allowed him to believe this.

He not only knew about the items being sold but he lied to the Buckeye Nation as a whole in December...He said they knew nothing until then.

There e-mail show there was no confidentiality or safety issues...even if there were the man has signed many contracts and some have been for multi-million dollar contracts...he knows when legal documents come into your possession that pertain to you, your subordinates, or your boss that your consult an attorney and you never hide it from your employer!!!!

His statement was complete bull[Mark May]. Maybe his nickname "Senator" is 100% spot on...we all know they are vague, great talkers, and full of [Mark May]. He lost my respect. This was a cover up plain and simple.

OSU>Jim Tressel

This is it in a nutshell. The problem is that he was supposed to have learned from his mistakes after MoC and all his off season problems the first three years. Hell, I thought he had and gave him credit for adapting and making changes. Ironically, some of the die hard supporters bristled at that notion, saying he was still the exact same man he had always been as if the very notion that he might need to change anything was preposterous. Well, they were right, and I was wrong.

Which begs the question of is he really capable of changing. He obviously didn't after the MoC debacle. He still was the greatest proponent of "in tressel we trust" out there. He has always had an almost biblical sense of self-righteousnes that has bordered on smugness and defined his management style. I don't buy anything about protecting his players from drug dealers after reading those emailsm. Now, protecting them from the compliance office and ncaa is anther thing entirely.

Quite frankly, I think he's lucky to have a job this morning, which is something I can only ascribe to two theories at the moment:

1). We are no different than USC or an SEC school and went through any tortured rationale necessary to keep a winning coach on the sideline.

2). Gee did not want to throw the university community into turmoil on the eve of the new campaign. He was between a rock and a hard place. Gee had to take some action against JT or risk alienating the big time academic donors, but if he fired tressel he risked [censored]ing off a significant amount of small time donors (think of those non-alums writing their 1500 check to the Buckeye Club fr ticket access). The result was slap his wrist hard but don't cut it off and hope everyone is happy.
