I stand with Jim Tressel - How Firm Thy Friendship

Love Coach Tressel and I live Michigan

The only reason and I mean the only reason that I root for Ohio State aside from playing Michigan is Coach Tressel. Same as Michigan State in basketball with Tom Izzo. I love the things Tressel represents toughness, time of possession, field position, and senior leadership. That's why I honestly think Jim was scared to say anything. Just b/c he loves his seniors and he preaches about senior leadership and he knows how special the seniors have meant to the program and I think he didn't want to let his seniors down.

A lot of haters might bash Tressel just b/c he's beaten your team can really tell Tressel is a stand up guy. I love listening to him. He's the best coach in College football today in my opinion.

still all in

Tressel's legacy is still greater than this or all of the NCAA issues the program has faced since he's been here--and that legacy's not just about the on-the-field success.

I am confused and saddened by some of his decisions during "Tat-gate", but I do believe JT puts the well-being of people first and has proven over and over again that he gives second chances and expects people to learn from their mistakes. So I as a fan and Buckeye am willing to give him the same opportunity in full confidence that he still ends his career here in good standing and on his terms.

Views on the Suspension from a Husker Fan

Greets all!

I'm a Husker fan that has always enjoyed coming to your forums and posting, because of the intense love of your team, the rabid fan base, and the sportsmanship that you guys have always show us. Doesn't hurt that we've got one of yours at the helm, either! LOL

Coach Tressel dodged a bullet, hopefully for him. Let me explain why i think that:

Look at the issue going on right now in Tennessee with Men's BB coach Bruce Pearl. He knowingly violated NCAA rules by hosting players (amongst other violations) at his home. They dinged him for unethical conduct, lack of instutional control, as well as other violations.

No other violation stings more than the accusation of unethical conduct, especially by a head coach. He's the head coach, after all - he's the one that sets the PUBLIC standard for all other employees in the athletic department.

Now, keep in mind - the SCHOOL has suspended and fined the coach. If the NCAA starts digging even deeper (and they're going to), then he could lose his job, even though President Gee has stated otherwise. If the pressure got turned up enough, they'll have no choice but to cut ties with him, which would be unfortunate.

I personally think he'll be fine - Pearl hasn't been the gold standard of coaching anyway, and Tressel is seen as a stand up guy. But when you involve the NCAA and they start the witch hunt, things get pretty ugly. And if you factor that in, the length of time that the alleged violations happened, the denial that there was a violation late last year, the way the players were handled, that's a really gray area.

I hope for the best for him - college football wouldn't be the same without "The Vest" or "The Senator"

Pearl was suspended for what, half the SEC season (8 games)? If so, JT's equivalent punishment would be 4.

Pearl is awaiting the NCAA's decision, which could increase his punishment.

But equating JT's actions to those of Pearl is apples and oranges to me, as I explained in the 'not all in' thread.

If I were in Tressel's situation I don't know what to do and at the time he believed he was doing the right thing. the problem is the national media is going to have field day with this since he has been portrayed as a man of character. He still is a man of character, who just happened to make a mistake whcih we all do from time to time.

Good point. It's always easy to look back at a situation and say that so and so should have handled the situation differently.

I will still employ my WWJTD? analysis when considering a significant decision. Fcuk the media, yahoo, espin and whomever else wants to pile on this. I still have The Winners Manual on my coffee table and we will still beat the dogshyte out of scUM in November.

Taking a look around at all the OSU hot spots tells me that this has actually galvanized the fanbase more than ever.

For right now, yes, it's time to circle the wagons. But when football season starts, and the E$PN bashing on TV gets louder and louder, and Tressel's punishment is either perceived as too harsh or too light, and the season starts and we might not be playing all that well...you're going to get the LeBron "hatahs gonna hate" crowd and you're going to get the "I'm embarrassed to be a fan of SEC North, er Ohio State" crowd...then we'll see what happens...

I probably would have signed onto this thread immediately after the press conference. After reading the e-mails, I can't. There is absolutely no way to spin their tone nor their content that doesn't stink.

There's still a lot of admirable things to support about jt: increasing grad rates, top ten apr, no oversigning, no use of medical scholarships and many others. On the other hand, he's also shown an arrogant, self righteous management style that at best is inconnsistent with operating within a proper university structure and at worst always seems to find ways to keep star players on the field. Ohio State>Jim Tressel and his football team. I think he refused to accept that, and it has cost him, the program and most importantly the university a huge public relations debacle.

As long as the president and the board decide that he is Ohio State's most visible representative, I still will support him and hope that he excels in ALL aspects of his job. That support, however, can't be blind. For too long after 2002, too many people act like he walks on water. He doesn't; he's not perfect.

Having had a night (and most of the morning, the wonders of working 4PM to midnight) to sleep on it and to think about it so far today, I STILL stand with Jim Tressel The Man.

The biggest issue now appears to be how to perceive these emails. No, they do not "look good" in the slightest. In fact, there is quite a contingent that think those emails make things quite a bit worse.

I think there are a couple issues at play here (and I'm sorry if I am re-hashing anything):

1. Context. There absolutely have to be details in the NCAA case that we do not know.

2. Other actors. Who else is involved in this issue? More importantly, while Ord and others have indicated that Tress is a bit of a control freak about his program (and let's face it, with his track record of success, everyone else really would be as well), but it's logical to think he would have eventually talked to 'someone', be it the players or compliance or his own legal beagles. Again these are probably details that are in the NCAA case that we won't know for a bit still.

3. Is Tress covering for the University? God, I hope not. Tress might be that type of guy to jump on the grenade, but I'm hoping that this isn't the case.

Either way I'm certain we all agree that JT made a mistake. I HOPE we all agree that he's sorry for the way he handled it vice thinking that he's sorry he got caught. That's not what I saw on the man's face last night.

I still stand with The Man, Jim Tressel. I think he stands for the right things, he will likely continue to espouse what I think to be the right way to live your life and I think he will continue to be a good influence for young people who come into contact with him.

He made a mistake. So he's not perfect. Knowing what I know of the man, I can live with a mistake and the punishment for that mistake. Sometimes you have to fail to learn. I think this will qualify.

I'm not very religious, but I think the following passage matters more now than it would have before:

Proverbs 19:25 (English Standard Version)

25 Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence;
reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge.

But if I am not mistake, Pearl reported this to the NCAA himself even after the fact.

I love Tress and the Bucks but he screwed up and now must take responsibility and the punishment.
