Identity theft - Credit Card Fraud Thread

Gatorubet

Loathing All Things Georgia
Anyone have any experience with either? I just finished talking to onme of my credit cards' fraud unit about chages made by me the last four days. Four days ago "Avon online sales" charged a dollar to my account (to see if it was "open" and "good" it seems), then about a hundred dollars was charged an hour later. I did not know that was happening at the time.

Today they charged two grand to the card from "Avon online" again, which prompted a call to the fraud unit, who then went over the last week's charges with me. More bogus charges were found. The card was cancelled.

How I found out about this is by trying to pay for my SUV repairs at the dealer and having them reject the card. :pissed:

Glad they caught it.

It must only happen in New Orleans... I already PM earlier this month about my son's card getting charged $150 when he was in your fine city for Mardi Gras. It happened to my wife in San Antonio for $500 and they did the same thing, little charges and then bam the big one. The person assumed her identity and said she lived in California. Told the fraud unit that she didn't live in Cali as she was right in front of me in our kitchen in Omaha (at the time). In both instances the charges were reversed, however it still ticks me off.....that it happened...

Been here.

Worse yet, the card was my debit card. I didn't know anything was going on until the bank calls me one morning to say, "hey jackass, you're $2,000.00 in the hole and you're still trying to spend money!" I go over my statements with them and it all happened in the span of 3-4 days. Very similar as well. $1 charge. A small charge or two. Then wham. Matters became exponentially complicated when I closed the account but direct deposits hadn't switched over yet. This was in 2001 and things just weren't the same.

I ended up getting refunded for everything by the vendors (Visa doesn't guarantee against fraud on debit cards) except for charges by Netzero for Internet service. I could have fought it, but after all I had been through I was OK with letting them keep it--was like $15 or something, can't remember.

This is an awfully inconvenient thing.

Lesson learned, NEVER USE YOUR DEBIT CARD ONLINE!

One of my previous employers accepted, authorized and used a debit card, without my permission. It had overdraft protection and they started bouncing checks.

Fought with Chase for two years. Just filed a complaint with the FTC.

You should hire a good lawyer.

But seriously, I had a similar experience and the card provider (my bank) took care of everything. It might be a good idea to institute a cash only policy in regards to massage parlors if you want there to be a "happy ending".

This happened to me about 2 months ago. There were 2 charges to Orbitz for $6 and $8, then $500 at "California Apparel Company", on a card I have not used in years. I found out because Chase called me within 2 hours of the transactions, and after a few weeks the paperwork cleared to void the charges and issue a new card. I found myself fairly impressed by Chase's response and how little hassle it actually caused me.

Has anyone gone to a massage parlor and asked for a "sad ending"?

The Sanding Glove? virtually eliminates the fatigue associated with
sanding by hand. This allows the user to easily sand in places that were
previously difficult to reach and makes the task of hand sanding very easy,
even for people with arthritis. Simplifies nuisance tasks such as sanding a
dowel rod or chair rung. Made of natural goat leather with genuine Velcro.

Will work with any abrasive disc w/loop backing. Simply attach the disc
to The Sanding Glove to begin sanding.

Our users agree that it's a real time and fatigue saver. Comfortable, ergonomic, no more cramped and aching fingers.

That is the infamous 'painful ending.'

My wife said she wanted to invent gloves like these years ago when she worked in the furniture industry--called the idea Sandy Hands.

Yes and yes. Happened to me a few years ago. The fraud folks at the CC company were excellent, because when someone tried to charge some software from the UAE, they called and were like WTF? Unfortunately, as good as the fraud people were, the customer service people were equally fucky, because we called to stop the card and get a new one by changing the account number...which they did, but for some inexplicable reason not until the 1st of the month (a few days later), which by then someone had bought some more software from Toronto :pissed: It did get taken care of though. It also happened to my dad just a few weeks ago. Both times were because of online card use, so the advice above by kn1f3party is excellent...NEVER use a debit or high limit $ credit card to buy stuff online...my wife and I both keep low $ cards for online purchases.

I wouldn't think anybody over the age of 15 could go through hand lotion so fast.
