Impending Assistant Coach Vacancies

That’s all well and good and I’m fine with it. You still need to manage/control the clock when necessary.

And I think he will be able to run the ball still so long as he can recruit RB/OL well. It wasn’t like they threw the ball 100% of the time in the first three games. I’m confident Ryan Day will do just fine, and truly believe he will be making the offensive playcalls similar to Riley at Oklahoma.

A couple of questions for Mr. Yurcich.
  1. Do you know what it means to run the ball and bleed the clock at the line when the situation dictates it?
  2. Do you know what a TE is in the passing game?
Coaches are damned if they do and damned if they don't most of the time.

Had a few situations worked out for Yurchich with regards to running the ball when trying to bleed the clock it would be different story. Had they completed a few of those situations everyone praises him for not playing conservative.

I want to throw to who's open and I want to stay aggressive.

When you run conservative plays you'll have almost near games that you almost blow like tonight.

Personally I like the hire. Elite offenses at the other OSU and especially through the air.

So we are clear, I like the hire as well. I just don’t want us to lose sight of being able to run the ball effectively. Granted that’s really going to be on the Oline ability as much as anything.

We didn’t almost blow the game by being conservative. We almost blew the game because we weren’t able to move the ball in the 4th quarter, shove it down their throat and bleed clock. Why were we going hurry up and snapping the ball with 20 seconds on the play clock late in the game? We could have easily bled minutes off the clock in those last two series combined with effective clock management and not made the game so tight. Let’s not be James Franklun okay.

Edit: I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who saw the WTF look Meyer shot after that incomplete 2nd down pass stopped the clock on the last series....

That's the point... if we connect on a few of those throws (which happened 70% of the time for 14 games) we praise him for his aggressiveness.

I agree we need to be able to run the ball when we need to kill clock. However I'd rather stay aggressive than to just play to kill clock.

IMO our play calling did change after we went up 28-3. Started running on early downs and got behind the chains. We weren't throwing on 1st as much.

At any rate... I'm confident our approach will be to be balanced.

Like Tate said... "Once we put the read option back in". We will run the ball more next year so no worries there.

I didn’t really see a change in play calling, but that’s me.

So, the read option is coming back next year? Are we sure? Why? Because Tate?

We got behind the chains a lot because of penalties. You can be aggressive with good runs and the ability to impose your will on a team. The notion that running the ball means your a conservative play caller is ridiculous.

IMO, what killed the second half offense was a passive 1st down approach, telegraphing runs that put them behind. Unfortunately, this team can't pound out drives like that. I get going conservative but they did it too early and gave Washington a chance to get back on its feet and pressure Haskins into bad throws that otherwise might have gone for huge plays. Haven't watched highlights of the game yet, but I bet in the second half he missed on 3 big plays. 2 to McLaurin and one to Hill. He hits one of those and the game ends somewhere in the ballpark of 38-17.

Needless to say, I don't think we should extrapolate from that one half. I'm more concerned about who the OL coach is going to be and if Wilson will stay. If they get a great OL coach, you'll see a lot more runs to bleed out clock if they're confident they can do it.

But what else are we going to bitch about ? We’ve got some wailing and gnashing of teeth to get working on bro.

Yep thats what I saw... poor 1st down play calling (penalties hurt too) which made us press on 2nd or 3rd and long.

Dwayne wasn't as sharp either so that went into it as well. Credit Washington though for that.

Well one of the 2 big plays to McLaurin was as much on McLaurin. It as a little high but it was essentially the same throw that Dixon scored on.

Yeah that should have been caught by Terry. Meanwhile our line didn’t offer stellar pass pro for much of the 2nd half and I didn’t find Haskins to be “sharp” last night. This team is goes through stretches like that. That’s who they are/were. While I am sure that changing the game plan might have altered things slightly, The game largely played out the way it did because the players are exactly what we’ve seen from them over the year. This game was not lost, won or played close because of the coaches. It’s because of the players.
