In-State vs Out-of-State and Motivation (split from Emilien thread)

Give me a kid from Columbus over a kid from south florida any day of the week..

Not a knock on Vlad, and we will be just fine in south florida...
woody always used to say one of the best motivators was a kids hometown...

ohio boys everywhere they go and everything they do is followed back home. trust me when i say every ohio boy took a lick over thanksgiving/winter break over the illini loss and then again after lsu. they hear about every tackle they missed in every game and if they loafed on playes. some people just dont get it. but ohio boys (sterotyping is bad but i feel confident about this) will lay it on the line for their state, team, community back home and high school etc. you dont see the direct correlation with out of state kids...

Yea, that James Laurinaitis guy is a real slacker. Craig Krenzel was always taking plays off, Cie Grant and Na'il Diggs were loafers, Will Allen got off the edge when he wanted to, when Ryan Pickett and Santonio Holmes were on the field they often seemed to be on vacation back in their home state of Florida, and don't even get me started on this Malcolm Jenkins guy. None of these guys ever seemed to get what OSU stands for and represents. I'm sure we can expect more of the same from J.B. Shuggarts, Michael Brewster, Terrell Pryor, and Dorian Bell (let's hope so).

I'm sure you're right with a lot of kids from Ohio that play for OSU, but there have been a ton of out-of-state kids that have personified what it is to be a Buckeye. I don't think it's fair to lay down such a blanket statement.

I don't mean any offense, I just think your post dismisses the fact that many out-of-state kids are motivated by their upbringings and backgrounds in the same way Ohio kids are, and no more or less so. My point is that all the former/current players I mentioned are out-of-staters that probably lay it on the line for the same reasons Ohio kids do. But we're getting off track here, so I'll leave it at that.

I think you meant the Fresh Prince (Will Smith). Will Allen was from Huber Heights Wayne.

Actually Cie Grant was born in Dover, OH and went to New Philadelphia H.S. and Will Allen was born in Dayton, OH and went to Wayne H.S. Not agreeing or disagreeing with you, just think facts are important in debates.

Thanks for the correction. I did mean Will Smith, not Will Allen (hence the reference to him coming off the edge). Anyway, my underlying point is that some of those players we think of as the hardest-working and most representative of what it is to be a Buckeye have come from all over the country, and don't have Ohio ties aside from playing in Columbus.

He said direct correlation between the OOStaters...

It is the same thinking as when an Ohio kid goes OOS and comes back home and plays against the home state school...

There is that extra fire for in-state kids, moreso than OOS kids...That is all he was saying...Not that there are OOS kids that don't by in, have great careers and become great buckeyes...

Cie Grant (New Philadelphia) and Will Allen (Dayton) were Ohio boys ... any argument benefits from factual accuracy.

Sigh. Yes. Again, I meant to say Will Smith (coming off the edge, etc). I didn't realize Grant was originally from Ohio. My bad. It does nothing to deter my point, though.

ding ding ding.

if you grew up in a small town you understand it. if you grew up in a town with a kid who played for ohio state you understand it. if you had a buddy who played for ohio state you understand it. even if the kid is lets say a third string linebacker. a kids hometown is a motivator. do you take brewster or some crappy kid from say athens just cuz hes an ohio boy, you take brewster. all things equal, or nearly equal you take the ohio boy.

nothing on vlad or any other player its a reality.

Zebrie Sanders would probably disagree. I think we're seeing us take the Ohio boy less and less as we become more and more capable of pulling national recruits. That is both problematic, for a variety of reasons, and encouraging, for a variety of reasons. You need to be able to maintain your ties at home while doing well outside our boundaries as well, which is a real tightrope walk. All things equal, I think the staff will take the player they like the most. It's why Vlad and McGee had offers before McDougald, and Henderson has an offer right now while James does not. These are just a couple examples, but you get the point.

By the way, I am from a small Ohio town (graduated from Germantown Valley View), so I understand where you're coming from. But I've also lived elsewhere in the country, outside Ohio's borders, and feel confident in saying that it's not just Ohio kids that are motivated by a desire to do their hometown right on a national stage, whether that be playing for the big time state university or an out-of-state national power like Ohio State. Just my opinion.

All things weren't equal for Zebrie. Next.
