Indiana Hoosiers Basketball (Dead Program)

I'm stunned that's not a more popular pick...I mean, what he's done at BAYLOR of all places is incredible.
The question is, what about IU now is more attractive than Baylor? Location? Nope. Facilities? Nope. Recent success? Nope. Recruiting base? Nope.

The one area IU beats them is historical success, but you have to go back almost 3 decades for their most recent period of sustained relevance. Maybe IU throws a pile of money at him, but I gotta think Baylor has deep enough pockets to match/exceed anything IU would throw at him.

I think they're in for some rough sledding if they think they're just gonna go out and grab an established guy. Four years ago, they happened to have one of the hottest mid-major names just a couple of hours east and grabbed him. Not this time.

Yeah, I agree. If Indiana makes overtures for Drew, Baylor will offer him a new contract matching/exceeding anything IU offers and he'll end up just staying at Baylor. Apparently he's already making over $3M per year at Baylor so he might even stay without a new contract, etc. He's been at Baylor since 2003 and is not likely looking to leave.

Here's What Indiana AD Scott Dolson Said After Archie Miller Firing

He spoke for 26 minutes and answered more than a dozen questions. Here are the highlights:
  • 'It's been a tough day... I'm confident in my decision but that doesn't make it any easier.'
  • "We have elite facilities, elite fan support and elite tradition. I think there is an opportunity for someone to take this program to the level we want it to be."
  • "The key thing on my mind is to find the right person... If we find the right person, we'll do everything we can."
  • "Prior to my conclusion that we needed to move forward in a new direction. I have zero conversations with any donors... I didn't take their temperature at all. I felt like I needed to do my due diligence. It has zero impact."
  • "I felt we needed a new voice and a new direction. I'm looking for someone who will re-establish the identity of IU basketball."
  • "I want our players to feel completely supported and they make all the right decisions moving forward."

It appears that Indiana can scratch these 2 guys off their list:

Alabama head basketball coach Nate Oats isn’t interested in the job opening at Indiana or other schools, he told WJOX 94.5 FM, as he prepares for the NCAA Tournament’s first round.

“It’s nice they bring your name up. That’s what happens when you win. That’s kind of inevitable,” Oats told The Roundtable on Tuesday morning. “I’m from the Midwest, there’s Midwest jobs that are opening. It’s gonna happen. But the reality is I’m not interested in them.

If I was interested in some of these jobs, I wouldn’t have been aggressive as we were in signing the extension. Greg Byrne was great to me. I love working with him. We love being at Alabama. When he sat down and offered me the extension and a raise, he said, ‘There’s give and take.’ And he’s right. They’ve put their foot forward for me, and I’m gonna do the same. They bumped the buyout up, which is fine. Like I said earlier, I don’t really care what the buyout is, I’m not going anywhere.”

Details on Nate Oats new $19 million contract, buyout structure

The six-year deal is worth a total of $19.4 million when including base pay, talent fees and a $12,000-annual expense account, according to the memo of understanding acquired by AL.com through an open records request.

Under the new deal, pending the rubber stamp from the board of trustees, Oats would owe the school a significant buyout if he were to leave in the first few years of the deal. He’d be on the hook for $12.6 million if he took a new job in the first year of the deal, $9.8 million if he left after the second year. It drops from there with the buyout down to $0 for the final two seasons.

“That’s home, I get it. I appreciate all the nice sentiments, it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed and it’s certainly very kind,” Stevens said. “…Passionate fanbase.”

When he was asked if he’s quitting the Celtics job to coach Indiana, Stevens replied quickly and straight to the point.

“I am not,” Stevens said.

I’m not in the know but the noise is rising. The talks have seemed to happen and some kind of offer made so the decision comes down to Brad- return to college or stick it out in the NBA. The call to go back home is tough to turn down.

Pretty crazy. Big fan of Brad Stevens.
